One of two submissions for a Christmas exhibition entitled "1 Ft Sq" - all the work is 1 Ft Sq...The Midnight Folk was one of my Granddad's favourite books - it's a kids book by John Masefield. The two haiku embroidered here were written by taking words from two pages of the book, chosen at random. Not only was I trying to write the feel of the book, but I was also relating them to my Granddad.
Lots of found fabrics used here - some I dyed with Turmeric, some with cold water dye, some I left as they were... And a lot of machine stitch.
The location is gently based on the hill fort where my Granddad's ashes are buried - that's his rock.

I can feel how much emotion you put into this piece. Your love for your granddad flows through the letters, pulses up the branches of the trees, and paints the very sky. Nicely done. :]

I have also lost my granddad. I know how it feels when your memories of him slowly fade away and you start wanting to do something that will remind you about who he was. That's why I liked your idea so much

Memory is a very important thing isn't it?
I just try and keep him with me; he and my Gran brought me up, so a lot of my views and choices have been influenced by him and his personality - like my love for this book.
