Description I wanted to make something for someone very special. The idea (and some of the style) was heavily influenced by a couple of pieces from the absolutely phenomenal artist mogcaiz:

Made in Maya, rendered with mental ray, with a grip of work in PS.

I made it at a massive 6600x8400 (22"x28" at 300dpi) for prints.

Thanks! It was fun to do even if it was a big change of pace for me.

Despite lilies not being my thing, these look good.

I like glowies. Especially that glowy butterfly thingy. It's so hard to pull that sort of thing off (for me at least). Nice touch putting a glow on your signature.

I hope the someone special appreciates it

Thanks - it was my first real attempt with said "glowies." I took a long hard look at a couple pieces from mogcaiz to get an idea of how to do it, and was fairly pleased with the end result.

And I believe they did appreciate it.

Pretty. When I saw it I thought of one of the textures in Maya. And when I read your description, my guess was concrete.
Well did you actually modeled this? Or used the fancy brushes?

I actually found the flower model... somewhere(?). I cleaned it up a little, and then duped and positioned it a bunch of times. I created the 30 odd texture variations from an original set of around 7, using the mental ray car paint shader to get some nice shiny blending between them.

Do you use 3dsmax aswell sometimes?
If yes, what do you think is easier to use? 3dsmax of maya?

Thanks

I've seen 3dsmax but never used it. I'm partial to Maya, and would go so far as to say it is better in some areas, but that is probably complete crap. There is an ocean of stunning 3dsmax work on DA that totally blows me out of the water. I think, when you strip away the interface and, to some degree, the workflow implementation, they are actually pretty similar. Maya uses a node based system that seems particularly intuitive and easy to use, but I am sure that max has an equivalent setup (or why else would so many people use it?). One thing that I have always been jealous of is that max supports vray. I still love mental ray, but I wouldn't mind having the flexibility of being able to use either one.

I think it all comes down to what you're comfortable with.

That is one stunning and magical piece for sure! The modeling looks amazing and what a great job to make this come to life like this! I would love to rub some of these on my head right before I go to sleep! Excellent work!
