Description Old stock, thought I had submitted this but I must have forgotten.

These men are abdi dalem (royal servants) of the Kraton Yogyakarta, the city palace. Abdi dalem have various duties depending on where they're stationed, ranging from taking care of the court family matters, maintaining important and sacred places, to administrative duties in different fields including kraton tourism.

These ones were taking a rest while waiting for their next duty shift.

Hello there Shinsen, have a couple questions about this great shot

How did the Abdi Dalem feel about you taking photos of them? Did you ask for their permission or was it shot inconspicuosly?

Why did you go for iso 1600 for this one? It seems like there is quite a bit of light available or is it just because im looking at it at iso 1600?

I didn't ask for permission on this one, as it was the immediate pose of the three that intrigued me, and asking permission would have ruined the moment. But after I took this the man on the right opened his eyes, so I gave a smile and a sign with my camera that I was photographing, to which he nodded. I went here during tourist visiting time, and these men are actually pretty used to be photographed all the time by tourists so I don't think they would mind anyway.

As for ISO 1600, I admit it wasn't intentional. I just got out from shooting indoor and forgot to change the setting. But they were really sitting below a heavy shade, you can't see it from this picture.

Thats exactly what I have to deal with sometimes, just having the courage and timing to go unnoticed in street photography. Not ruining the moment and capturing it just the way you want it with minimal time for adjustments is quite the problem. Im glad however that the man nodded after you showed him your camera, just having a sense of permission makes photos more satisfying sometimes.

Glad you explained the iso 1600, was wondering if it was intentional for some sort of aesthetic. I too have done the same and i guess i was just wondering if we were in the same boat.

Thanks for following up Shinsen, keep up the good work.

It's good. The vertical framing lends a difference to it that horizontal wouldn't.

You're right, I actually tried taking a horizontal framing too and it doesn't look as good.
