This is an awesome facial study. Like all your other deviations. Mmmmkay so now we know you can draw faces that look awesome. Great.
You need to try something new and more challenging, I think. I would suggest color, or a new medium. Start acrylics or something. Work on color in your entire composition. The color in these pieces does indeed look very real, and that is ok, but on the whole they would make a yak puke. The colors are not unified at all and they come together to create an ugly that even a mother couldn't love.
Try something not black and white, and go nuts. Try and figure out what colors go with which to please the eye. Experiment with the number of colors you use in drawings. Two or twenty? Red and white, or all of them?
If i'm being too harsh, have a cookie. I still love you!
You could work on composition too. While this drawing of a crazy hair day is impeccably rendered, you should consider what you are drawing. On one of my older deviations, someone commented "don't draw something that you wouldn't frame," and while it pissed me off at the time and made me really indignant, he was right in a way. This piece is still just a study that I wouldn't want to walk by in my hallway. You could send a message by showing what she is looking at! What she is reaching for! You could put abstract floating panda bears in the background! I would like to see you move away from reality and send a message; with these portraits, your message is severely restricted by the expression of the subject.
The best thing about deviantART is that we have such great examples to learn from. If you absolutely must stick to portraits, try taking a long look at ` jasinski 's work, and look at how he expands his portraits into the background of the picture. Something like that with Daniel Radcliffe (NOT staring intensely into my eyes) would make me soil myself. Take an additional look at *minix 's use of color, and see what kind of a mood you can put into your art; even a portrait of a contemplative Daniel Radcliffe can be more stunning if they are only shades of red or blue, or (gasp) green.
I don't want to sound condescending. I don't think that your art right now is bad. I just want to see you do something else. You can get a lot better than this.
Top recommendation: go out and buy some acrylics and go nuts. Have fun! Art should not give you migraines.

Yes, I know what you mean here. And I actually have been attempting a lot of things in color lately, but nothing i have found i would want posted here just yet. This picture was both a study, and something to challenge myself with. I did have an idea to mess around with this piece and do some crazy colored painting behind, or even over top of it! a copy of it anyway, lol. im not sure yet, i still have to get my ideas together. the point here is, i know what you're saying, and i definitely respect it. though im not tiring of working on portraits, i really do want to try something off the wall and different, but everytime i do, my ideas dissappear from me, or completely overrun me and then i cant think straight. im not sure what to do about it just yet, but im trying. my art teacher has been a big help when it comes to that. anyway, dont think of this as an excuse, just an explination. though, your comment might have inspired me enough to finish something i have been working on thats completely different from my usual. i suppose i owe you a bit of gratitude for that
acrylics, ahaha, i still have some. believe it or not i used to paint crazy stuff with them all the time, though i prefer crazy stuff in oils better lol i enjoy confusing people with paintings, its quite fun

Totally gorgeous. You did a stellar job with the hair, and I really admire you for sticking with the project, even though it was hard and not always fun. It looks photographic in the realism, truly!

Awesome work! I'm glad the final copy came out so well. Would you recommend trying pencils for a project like this? Or would you recommend charcoal? I'm thinkin about doing a realism piece like this for art.
