Description this is hyde, form the j-rock band l'arc en ciel. im drawing this as part of the prize for tsuki-no-neko, the winner of my contest. its actually a pretty big project, and hyde is only one of two portraits, the other one being of gackt<3 its hard to explain here's the photo its being drawn from: [link]
and heres the other picture im doing of gackt for it: [link]
unless one of you has a better suggestion for the gackt picture. anything that would go with the hyde picture works for me im pretty set on the hyde pic though
anyway, just thought id show y'all what im up to

I have a question about the papaer, what sort do u use for this one?? the paper I have smears the pretty much of the graphites all over the paper.. I try to have apiece of paper under my hand while drawing but it smears anyway..

i use bristol board, aka bristol smooth paper. u can buy it in a pad or single sheets. theres a trick to not smudging with your hand, cuz i used to have that problem too. i slowly trained myself to hold my hand so it wasnt resting on heavily penciled areas, but in the meantime, try using a sheet from a magazine. the lead doesnt stick very well to that slick paper, so less smudging! whereas regular paper can acually make it worse!

Love most of the art in your gallery Need some words of wisdom though. I was curious, do you use a blending tools on large areas such as the face and hands, or do you just blend with your fingers? I was in my local art shop today and noticed a huge blending tool and thought that it could be handy for things like i just mentioned. Also do you use the monolith woodless pencils? Again just curiousity. Anyway i'll quite my blabbing, keep up the great work

Martin.

thanx! i do use humongous blenders sometimes, lol! a lot of times if its a large area, just using nice soft even strokes with your pencil looks better. im not sure if theyre monolith or not, i dont remember *makes mental note to check*

How long did you spend to
do this piece? I nomally
finish a complete drawing in
three days with 24 hours
work.

shley77 In reply to stanco [2005-01-28 14:04:00 +0000 UTC]

well, wit 24 hours of work, i could probably finish it that day. but i can only work a few hours at a time, cuz my eyes are getting bad, kinda need glasses, lol. that and, after too long, i just cant really 'see' the drawing anymore if you know what i mean.

Almost without exception, my favorite stuff on DA these days is titled "work in progress"... There's something indescribably beautiful about something as well drawn as this, taken just to the edge of completion and then held there... I can't explain it; but I love this drawing very much, and find it complete in every way.

This is great, the touch, the tones, you captured the skin tones very well. Although you will provide sufficient hair to cover those ears, otherwise I think they are a bit too dark.

I do have much better pictures for the Gackt-drawing, Would you like to have a look at them?

thanx! not blending also distracts from the details sometimes. i mean, look at * nimra 's works, he blends, and there is no lost detail there but then, he IS nimra, lol
