Description SO GLAD I finally get to post this, hot damn!

This is my piece for the upcoming GIRLS: Fact + Fiction show, opening December 7th at the Light Grey Art Lab gallery space in Minneapolis, MN. We were invited to draw any fictional or factual lady of our choice, so I went with Hatshepsut because, well, she’s Hatshepsut. If I am to believe all of those ancient statues of her, she looks damn fine in a pair of aviators.

I’m not going to be able to make the opening myself, but you can check out the invite for the show over on facebook if you’re so inclined and/or local.

PRINTS AND ART BOOK
Also worth mentioning is that the people behind Light Grey Art Lab have already set up an online store for the show! You can pick up prints of all the art, along with a limited edition art book collecting all of the pieces in the show with short blurbs about each of the featured ladies.

You can pick up a print of my piece HERE, and grab the art book HERE. Go forth and look at all the pretty art!

Hatshepsut is one of my favorite women! Egyptian art is so cultural and unique, I love how you connected her Pharaoh-ness and a woman attitude. Favorite.

I like the mix of pop art and realism. The simple cartoony lines and bold colors contrast nicely with the realistically painted muscles and skin. I'm actually really impressed by how you did the knees. Those always give me trouble.

Nice stylization! Excellent choice for the show.

The beard is a bit weird for me, but I guess some of the sculptors included it, too.

The anatomy in this art piece looks so amazing; the details range from the boney part of the body--the knee-- to little creases in the face area around the nose and mouth. It's just so spectacular and the way your colour/shade it also amounts to the awesomeness of this picture!

Very nice tonal modulation! x3 It's beautiful!!

I was gonna ask the same thing that ~LedStripedDoors21 asked! XD I love that cat though!

She died a very painful death of a weird growth in her mouth, and they thought pulling her tooth out was going to help, but ended up making it worse and punctured the cyst in her mouth which then spread the bacterial infection into her blood stream. Not only that but her life was very tragic D;> She lost everyone in her life but her husband/halfbrother. BUT She was very powerful and did many things to accomplish what many could not! Even though her name and image was scratched out all over the region, it wasn't because she was a bad ruler and they didn't like that she was a female pharaoh, it was to protect the future generation's reputations. XD End lesson for the day
I'm very glad you picked her! X33

LedStripedDoors21 In reply to ??? [2012-12-01 00:48:41 +0000 UTC]

This turned out great! If you don't mind me asking why didn't you put her name in the cartouche's? Also just otta curiosity why did you use the image of a cat instead of a vulture since the snake and vulture symbolize upper and lower Egypt? I really do love this piece though!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shoomlah In reply to LedStripedDoors21 [2012-12-01 00:53:55 +0000 UTC]

The vulture is behind her! It's Bast, Nekhbet, and Wadjet- three protector deities for the pharaoh, and I went for Bast and Wadjet in the forefront because of the visual symmetry.

The cartouches say the respective deities names- bastet and wadjet.
