Description ANGIE CROSBY (USA) and ATHENA ORCHARD SPRINT @ Midsummer Celebration 2020
Summer Solstice Showjumping Grand Prix (150 cm)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Angie frowned into the sky. Thankfully, the grey cloud that had just dumped a rain shower on them was slowly rolling away, and the sun returned.
Alan could barely hide his grin. "I thought you'd turned into a true Scotswoman by now," he said, hands in his pockets. "A little rain like this? I'm disappointed."
Angie pulled the show jacket off her head that she'd used as protection against the rain, shot him an unimpressed look, and started walking the next distance with long, firm strides. It was a wide turn between two verticals - unassuming at first, but Angie spent a good amount of time walking the distance again and again, taking it a little tighter every time.
Alan watched her attentively. "What's that gonna be?" he eventually asked.
"I think I'm gonna try the six strides here," Angie murmured. "Most go for seven here, but I think I can do better."
Alan didn't know a great deal about showjumping (he had just joined her for company and emotional support), but what said seemed weird even to him. She had said a similar thing to every single obstacle they'd come across so far - that she'd do it differently than the others and why that would be so much better, and none of that made much sense to him.
"Isn't that DD's first Grand Prix?" he asked. "Wouldn't it be better to play it safe rather than risky and go for the experience? She's young after all."
Angie laughed, slung her dark red jacket over her shoulder, and stalked to the next obstacle. Alan followed with a distance.
"Y'know, my dad never thought highly of this mare," she said. "He thought she was too long and too ugly and not very talented. He said if he found a stallion with a very short back we could at least breed her, but - I quote - she'd do shit as a sport horse."
"Well, conformationally correct isn't a word I'd use to describe her necessarily... but she isn't doin too bad in the sport, isn't she?"
"Yeah! It might've taken her a little longer and, yeah, maybe she's lacking the talent in places, but she has twice as much grit as every horse I've ever ridden - together." Having arrived at the next oxer, Angie turned around until her back was against it. "You know I love breaking peoples' expectations," she smirked. "Especially when they are my dad's."
(short and sweet, but i absolutely cant write right now XD i had to write it in german and translate it (which worked surprisingly well, maybe that'll get my next chapter unstuck? lol)
yeeee i didn't think i would finish this but somehow i made it!!
I know I haven't been around a lot, I'm sorry - school (projects) is/are keeping me busy and my motivation for everything else is very low. (motivation for 3d animation is low too tho.) But Midsummer is a thing I can never pass on! Can't believe it's already A WHOLE YEAR since I was in Ireland, painting the last one...
This was a blast to draw, for the first time I could utilise the full set of Polychromos (like, properly). I did a digital colour thumbnail with the sketch and then tried to match that as closely as possible and I def never got this close before! Also, I used the hot pressed watercolour paper I bought on a whim a while ago (the same I painted Wet Land on) AND I THINK I'M IN LOVE. like, it has everything: it's smooth but still kinda "soft", layering is a dream, you get great saturation without TONS of pressure - and what thrills me most is that it isn't as sensitive as the printer or Bristol paper I've used before (which you can NEVER touch with your bare hand because then the coating breaks (or sth) and you get little spots in your drawing.. weird) It's honestly perfect and I don't understand why it took me so long to try hot pressed watercolour paper for pencils. Can only recommend, especially if you like detailing and smooth colouring, mmm
Also, holy moly, did I learn a thing or two since I first participated in 2018 ...
