Description ... After playing Rufus ShinRa in the Advent Children version (wheelchair and all) for the last two years at our local Anime/Manga convention... I have developed a whole new sense of respect and admiration for those who are confined to a wheelchair for one reason or another.

It's truly a difficult place to be in.

This one's for all of you.

- Character copyrights belong to Square Enix.

Edit:
As I've mentioned a while ago, I've decided to extend this one-shot comic into a series. I've since dubbed it "The Wheelchair Theatre.

Hello!

Glad to know you liked this little one-shot so much! (There are two other episodes that are linked in the comments section. I hope you'll pay them a visit, too.) This one stemmed from the reaction I had to a real-life experience... so I guess every bit of my griping shows...

Thank you very much for adding it to your list of favourites. I appreciate the gesture very much!

I favourites this for two reasons

1: I'm in a wherlchair myself and like the spin you've put on it

And

2: When I first read it I wAs drinking a cup of tea, I say was as I laughed so hard I covered my keyboard with All my tea.

(good excuse for my new shiny keyboard )

Hello, hello!

Thanks for the response back. I remember my turn in the wheelchair, myself (thank goodness it was only for a short term). But even for this very short term, I got to experience a lot of the mobility problems that the wheel-enabled folks had to face on a daily basis. It was (partially) for that reason that I have created my series of one-shot comics that I call "the Wheelchair Theatre". It's certainly a different take on the popular FFVII characters, for sure. But I like to think this version speaks out to a group of people who have my admiration.

Congratulations on the new keyboard. And once again, it's my honour and my pleasure to make you laugh! (OK... maybe not the "spewing of tea" bit. But that's great, too.)
If you feel inclined, there are two more episodes of the "Wheelchair Theatre" revolving around the same theme that's linked at the bottom of the artist's comments. I hope those will bring a small smile to your face, too.

Greetings:

Thank you very much for leaving this comment!
I did this comic (and the 2 after it) because at that time I was in a wheelchair, too. I was glad that I was only in it for a very short time, but it really made me realise how difficult life can be while in a wheelchair. (I was tossed out of my chair by a friend thanks to some stupid rules from a local Harvey's... long story, that one.) So I said: "This is for all the people who are or have been in a wheelchair in the past; this goes out to you."

It means the world when folks like you write back to me!

LOL I was Rufus Shinra once, full costume, in the wheelchair as well.
My friends dressed up as turks and we strolled into our local anime convention (well they strolled, I rolled XD)
Then they ran me into walls, tossed me out of my wheelchair, and almost pushed me down the stairs.
It was so much fun though, especially when on of them rode of in my wheelchair and I crawled after them.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to madmanprophecy [2010-01-18 10:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Whew~

My Turks were my brother and one of our friends. They don't have the guts to chuck me out of the chair. Besides... I was a very convincing invalid (to the point that other invalids actually ceded the elevator to me...). At that time, we were all volunteers at a local hospital, so we all know how to handle a wheelchair - trained to do so, really. So, I wow-ed some unsuspecting folks by doing tight turns in the chair and doging people. That... was grand fun.

... by the end of the first day... We started to call me and my chair "the battering ram." It didn't matter how many people were in front of us, all they had to do is nudge the line, and people part ways for the wheelchair. That worked out great, too.

I miss those days... a whole lot. It had certainly made me appreciate the folks in wheelchairs a lot more, too.

Thanks for the favourite!
And the moment I get my PS up and running, it's time to start colouring episode #3!

madmanprophecy In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2010-01-20 04:20:55 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the place that had the anime convention had it on the third floor, and there was only one elevator (very small one at that). I'm glad I'm not stuck in a wheelchair; and after that day, I don't know how some people could handle it for their entire life.

You're welcome and YAY episode 3!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to madmanprophecy [2010-01-20 07:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh... when I said I was a really convincing invalid, I meant it.
During the time when I was in the wheelchair, I don't (can't) get out and act it, too. A friend of mine accidentally toppled my chair over on the first evening. She had no wheelchair training and the people at the fast-food joint beside the venue were pretty mean at us. They said it was policy that we go out by the back door after hours. There was only a little stretch of narrow, narrow pavement with the smallest excuse for a ramp as possible. My friend lost control of the chair and I (wrapped up that I was) just toppled out, person, Jenova, chair and all.

... You should hear the gasps and the horror from the people around. Some of them was ready to go into the fast food joint to punch those people up.

My brother was there to pick me up. And since he was a bigger guy than both me and my friend (he plays Rude), he basically spread out his arms and yelled: "Let me handle this! Get out of the way!"

... I was a little scratched up. But I can't imagine what would've happened if I was really handicapped back in that episode. I would've been hurt, a lot (enough to sue those fast food guys to the kingdom come...). And in this job... it just makes you appreciate your own mobility so much more...

Thank you! I hope to get that #3 up soon!

Orochitachi In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2009-10-29 01:27:50 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I do I do! My mother also had an opportunity to see it as well... XD She was amused... (I was visiting her for a while... She happened to walk by when I was on, she paused, turned and asked, "Is that Rufus?")

(She actually was the one who had introduced me to the Final Fantasy universe) I just thought I'd mention it... XD

Funny how these things happen... Yes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Orochitachi [2009-10-29 02:28:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh, absolutely.

You see... I've got a similar story to tell. My dad is usually the stuffy, stubborn type of person, really. He raised Holy Hell when we dragged a wheelchair back hom the first year, claiming that "No one in this family needs one of those! Don't bring it into the house!"

Well... by the second day, he was helping us loading the contraption into his van.

About two years after that, I've got a set of matching mugs made. My brother who played Rude got a "Rude mug". Our friend got the "Reno" mug and I kept the "Rufus" mug. Well... my stuffy dad became quite peticular about who these mugs belong to (we usually don't care). When we are home, he'd only hand over the Rude mug to my brother (Rufus mug isn't home). No exceptions.

So... you're absolutely right... funny how these things happen, hein?
(By the way, I hope your mother had a little bit of fun on the expense of the blown-down building...)

Hmm... so it seems that you have.

All right, it's time to test your FFVII Advent Children die-hard-ness: Remember those road blocks on the highway that Cloud and Kadaj ran through/ran over? (Yeah, who doesn't? That's the famous "highway chase" scene, right? Right before the iconic lines from Rude and Reno.)

OK, so the question is: Who put up those road blocks?
The answers are written on the road blocks themselves. I suggest "freeze frame" to see them

I don't have time to pop in my movie but I believe the ones who put it up was 'Edge' or 'Midgar'

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to DarknessofSadness [2009-06-03 00:09:56 +0000 UTC]

Aie, aie...

Looks like you've missed an Easter Egg in the movie!

"Edge" was the city where Cloud and Tifa lived in Advent Children, which, in turn, was built on the ruins of Midgar. These aren't people. The "World Regenesis Organisation" (which features largely in the Dirge of Cerberus game), however, is a group of people whose aim is to rebuild the planet.

If you freeze frame the movie right at the road block, you'll see that it's WRO who put up the signs!

Oh, don't worry about it.
It's just a silly trivia.

Now, if you really want another question...
"We all know the three Remnants. That's Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo. Now, there's one thing that Yazoo and Loz have in common that Kadaj doesn't. This trait, however, is shared by Kadaj and Sephiroth. What is it?"

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to DarknessofSadness [2009-06-04 18:43:16 +0000 UTC]

Oh, my...

Maybe it's the way I framed the question that's got you confused (and if it is, I apologise).

Both Loz and Yazoo are right-handed. Kadaj and Sephiroth, on the other hand, are both left-handed. That may also explain why Kadaj, as the youngest of the Remenants, is actually the leader of them: he was closest to their original form, Sephiroth.

(Oh, and the drug effects should've worn off after about 6 hours or so. If you still feel strange, it's got to be your teeth that feel funny...)
