8/5/21 EDIT: New design!
The old version of this design was looking rather unfocused and lacking in terms of flair like most of my old fakemon artworks were, so I spruced it up a little for this revamp here. More specifically, I decided to lean into the more fantastical, chimeric aspects of the mythological makara. The changelog here includes turning the spiraling projection on the snout into an actual short trunk and combining it with a set of lips around the mouth like in depictions of fearsome animals in traditional Southeast Asian artwork, replacing the tooth-like projections with actual teeth including a pair of tusks like the makara is often portrayed with, simplifying the scales and body patterning for greater cohesion, and making the fins more monstrous-looking with the pectoral flippers being midway between legs and fins as a nod to fossil proto-cetaceans which were still semi-terrestrial. I also gave her eyes back, since she looked too weird without them, but had them permanently closed because, as mentioned in the original description below, Asian river dolphins are basically blind anyway. I also toned down the butt-like appearance of the forehead - not Magmar-level extreme for sure, though still there if you squint a bit - and in Phindus that bit is gone entirely. Probably for the best that I did that lol. I also changed the name as well - the old one just didn't have that nice a ring to it, and this new one is not only more fitting but still fits the 10-letter limit I usually try to impose on myself for fakemon names. Neat, huh?
Just a few more revisions to go, and then the remaining work of this region can proceed! I have other business to attend to first on the fakemon scene, though, so stay tuned for that soon as well!

I had the design for Phindus' evolution finished already, and had even colored and shaded it before Phindus herself was posted, so her evolved form also gets posted today. Two fakemon in one day? Impossiboru!!
It was a bit of a challenge to come up with a good design for my dolphin fakemon's evolved from - I wanted the dolphin to evolve, unlike the previous medic 'mons who, as of now, are still single-stagers - but Phindus already had such a good design basis on an obscure and really interesting animal species and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel with a completely different second stage. As noted in Phindus' entry, the original pitch was an Amazon river dolphin or boto that evolved into a mythical encantando, which shapeshifts into a person to seduce women, which is why the secondary Fairy type was a thing. At the risk of sounding hypocritical in the sense that I have lemurs, wendigos, baobab trees, and something based on the Native American Horned Serpent in an Indonesia-inspired region (read: none of them are native to Indonesia), I think tossing a South American mythical monster into this mix would be a bit of a stretch even for the Pokémon games - as the aforementioned list of non-native inspirations indicates, there isn't anything wrong with this sort of transplant, and it's been done in canon so many times already, but botos are firmly associated with the Amazon to most people who know of them and I think a boto fakemon would be better off in a Brazil-based region, like AtmaFlare 's WIP Tupama region (which I highly recommend checking out, hint hint).
Fortunately, a conversation with Atma came to my rescue. By happy coincidence I found out that there's another species of river dolphin that lives much closer to Indonesia, relatively speaking, and while the Ganges river in India isn't quite within the range associated with my region I went "eh, close enough" and went with the South Asian river dolphin instead. I was in the middle of typing my reply to Atma on this topic when I decided to check if this species had any mythological counterpart to use as a basis for an evolved form. Imagine my pleasant surprise to learn that there actually is one: the Makara, a chimeric sea monster from Hindu lore which appears as the steed of both the river goddess Ganga and of the sea god Varuna, and in Hindu astrology, is equivalent to the zodiac sign of Capricorn. A round of Google image searching and pencil sketching later and I had my design, which I'm proud of because I pretty much nailed it on the first try without having to redraw it as with several other fakemon in my region. So thanks, Atma, for accidentally inspiring me - and I certainly look forward to your own encantando fakemon design!
Srilankara (it took me a while to come up with a good name, but some canon Pokémon names have even more off-the-wall etymologies so nyeh~) is mechanically based on the only known actual evolution to something from the "pink XP-heavy medic" Pokémon lineup, basically the Blissey to Phindus' Chansey. I'll never understand the changes that Blissey undergoes upon evolving from Chansey, though - Bulbapedia states that Chansey is based on some kind of a monotreme, while Bogleech's Pokémon reviews state that she's an axolotl, which makes more sense given their regenerative powers, but both agree that Blissey isn't really based on anything specific, just a pink egg-shaped nurse... monotreme... thing. To Bogleech's chagrin, since the axolotl theme would've made for a much more interesting design cue for both Blissey and... "Happiny", you say? I don't know what you're asking about? Aaaaand I'm going on a tangent now so back to the topic at hand lol. The point is that Srilankara, while mechanically similar to Blissey, is much more cohesive in terms of design and connection to her pre-evolution. Rather than dropping everything that makes the first form so special, I took what I liked about it - the long jagged jaws, the hand-like flippers, the swirly markings like in Hindu artwork, and yes, even the butt-forehead - and rather than just making it a bigger dolphin, I also took cues from depictions of the Makara, which is often envisioned as having fish-like scales, an extravagant and colorful tailfin, and occasionally, the head and trunk of an elephant. The swirly bit on Phindus' snout is actually the precursor of Srilankara's "trunk", and the flippers have become actual hands in reference to dolphin fins being basically specialized arms as well as hinting at the Makara's chimeric nature. I nearly scanned the design without giving it anything resembling ears, but then I noticed that the head looked kinda bland even with the butthead and that Makaras are often shown with external ears even though dolphins don't have those, so I slapped on these fleshy swirly things on the sides of the head as a compromise. Lastly, the decision to replace the dot eyes with colored spots was a last-minute addition, but I'm glad I threw it in. River dolphins are virtually blind and rely on their echolocation exclusively, and making the face eyeless while still hinting that eyes were once there continues the theme of the zoological basis while distinguishing her from her pre-evolved form.
I pretty much gave away the entirety of Srilankara's combat info already - it's the same as that of Phindus, since like with Chansey/Blissey, their movepools are exactly the same. Literally the only difference is the stats which, as with Blissey, take what's good about the first form and improve upon it. The stat upgrades between Phindus and Srilankara are, in fact, virtually identical to those from Chansey to Blissey - 5 points to HP, Attack, Defense, and Speed; 40 points to Special Attack, and 30 points to Special Defense. Blissey is, of course, infamous for sponging everything with her colossal Special Defense and HP - Blissey and my namesake Pokémon used to be a popular metagame tagteam for a reason - and Srilankara can do the same thing to some extent, but not quite as well due to both of said stats being somewhat lower. She makes up for it with a frightening 100 Special Attack stat, though, and the attacking options she had as a Phindus become even more terrifying with said stat to back it up. This is one mythical medic who will make you endangered if you push her too far, and even though supporting others is still her best lot in life, always remember what the late, great Terry Pratchett once wrote: "Never trust a species that grins all the time. It's up to something."
With this, I now have 70 fakemon complete for this region. Just 60 to go!
