Description
Hello there. I'm SilverEagle91. For this double comparison, I'm comparing the Fairly OddParents episode "Timmy Turnip" and the Fanboy And ChumChum episode "Cold War" to the Pinky And The Brain episode "The Family That Poits Together, Narfs Together" and the Slugterra episode "Lightwell". The first comparison deals with family visits while the second comparison deals with sick friends. Let's see how Pinky And The Brain and Slugterra did better.
Timmy Turnip: The plot is fine, but not the execution. This episode involves Timmy's Aunt Gladys and Grandpa Vlad visiting him where they keep annoying him with their traditions. He then wishes that they never went to America so he wouldn't have to deal with them, causing the whole family to live in their country. The main problem is how unlikable the main characters are. Gladys and Vlad are so "in your face" with their traditions that they become annoying, and yet you're supposed to sympathize with them. Timmy is unlikable due to how extreme his wish is. Disregarding that, the humor is repetitive since they shove the "old country" humor in your fave so much that it becomes aggravating. The only good thing is the ending where he fixes his mistake and gets them to America, but it's not worth it due to the frustrating experience.
The Family That Poits Together, Narfs Together: Let's see how this episode fares better. This episode involves a contest where the winner will receive a $25,000 grand prize. Brain decides to enter that contest with Pinky's family in order to win that prize and get the equipment needed in order to take over the world, but they're as dumb as a bag of rocks, and it gets on his nerves. Why this episode works better is that Brain is clearly in the wrong. He's bringing the family together in order to take over the world, a bad deed, which makes his downfall at the end well deserved and nicely foreshadowed. As for Pinky's family, they may be idiots, but they're pretty over the top that they're hilarious and they unintentionally torture Brain after his motivation is set up, which helps make it more justified.
Winner: The Family That Poits Together, Narfs Together
Here are the writers for the episodes.
Timmy Turnip: Ray DeLaurentis & Will Schifrin
The Family That Poits Together, Narfs Together: Earl Kress, Charles M. Howell IV, John Ludin
Now it's time for the second comparison.
Cold War: The plot is actually fine, but not the execution. This episode centers on Fanboy and ChumChum becoming sick after they stay outside in a rainstorm. They then decide to pass the time trying to do various activities, and eventually decide to hang out with Kyle when he goes to drop off their homework. First off, the plot is pretty barebones. It just randomly switches from the boys trying to care for themselves to them trying to befriend Kyle with no transition whatsoever. Beyond that, Fanboy and ChumChum are bigger idiots than usual considering it was their fault they got sick, and yet you're supposed to sympathize with them when they try to befriend Kyle. It's not only morally backwards, it's also annoying. As for the ending, did Kyle really have to be sent away like that? Also, the ending is a pretty poor attempt at a bookend. This is just one big mess.
Lightwell: Let's see how this episode did the sickness plot better. In this episode, Burpy (Eli's main slug) becomes sick through unknown diseases, and only a trip to the Lightwell, a purification cave, can cure him, but the path to get there is pretty dangerous due to the monsters. First off, it turns out that it was Dr. Blakk, the show's antagonist, made Burpy and many other slugs sick, so said slug actually stays likable, especially since they did nothing wrong. The adventure to get to the cave is pretty epic with all the creative obstacles in the way, and a pretty cool side plot with the other members of the Shane gang trying to drive away Blakk's minions. It also manages to show how being limited doesn't mean you still can't fight. You just have to find your way around things. The ending definitely gets you hyped up for the next episodes.
Winner: Lightwell
Here are the writers for the episodes.
Cold War: Scott Kreamer
Lightwell: Eugene Son
