Synopsis: “The families go on a trip to Paris.”

One of the quintessential Nicktons for many people growing up was Rugrats, a show that took a simple concept of baby misadventures, and made something quite unique out of it. For all its faults, the show definitely delivered a lot in that regard, with this movie, “Rugrats In Paris: The Movie”, being a prime example. Let’s see why. The movie involves the main family members going to Paris when Stu is summoned to EuroReptarland, a Japanese amusement park, to fix a malfunctioning Reptar robot. Chuckie is on a mission to find a mother figure in his life when he and Chas run into Coco LaBouche and her partner Jean Claude, who work at the park. Unbeknownst to them, she’s planning on using them by pretending to date him just so she can be president of the Reptar franchise due to Mr. Yamaguchi stepping down. Making things worse is that Chas plans to marry her, while she traps the babies in the wear house. Now it’s a race to get to the church and stop the wedding from happening. This movie heavily deals with themes on romance and family, which helps give it a nice sweet charm to it. Let’s analyze that through the major characters.

Starting with Chuckie, he’s very obviously the star of the movie, and thus goes through quite the character arc. Obviously, it’s about trying to find a mother figure in his life, but this goes a step further. We see early on how his mother died when he was very young, like just after birth, which helps fuel his motivations. What I think gives him that likable charm is that he never compromises who he is as a person, nor does he go for someone purely angelic. It’s how he goes for a mother figure who can be loving to him and Chas. He also gets plenty of moments of bravery to help push his character along.

Chas’s arc also ties nicely into Chuckie’s. Yes, he does get lovestruck with Coco to the point of making some stupid decisions, but it works here. It’s shown that he’s a broken man who just wants to be the best parent he can be, and is simply letting his emotions cloud his judgment. What also helps his case is that for all the times he accidentally ignores Chuckie, he’s also just as willing to try and re-establish bonds with him so that their family can be whole.

Now we talk about Kira and her daughter Kimi, who marry into the Finster family at the end of the movie. What helps strengthen their bonds is their own personal conflicts. Kira is Coco’s assistant, but unlike her, she’s genuinely nice and caring, especially to kids. Her main flaw is that, while willing to do the right thing, she’s also more willing to follow others, which makes her a great foil for Chas. As for Kimi, she may seem like a female Tommy due to how more bold and adventurous she is, but she’s actually a bit more rebellious and free spirited due to, again, Kira’s protective nature occasionally clashing with her.

Now let me talk about Coco. Given that Rugrats rarely has any villains outside of bullies, misunderstood outcasts, and those just protecting others, she definitely stands out due to how much more vain and power hungry she is. This helps increase her charm when you couple that with how manipulative and calculative she is.

The themes of love and family resonate strongly at the climax. Kira does everything she can to get to the church, focusing more on making the Finster men happy by returning Chuckie’s bear. Chuckie and Kimi work well with the other babies like peas in a pod when trying to get to the wedding. Of course, Chas calls it off, and marries Kira at home. This ending helps cement the themes of the movie by ultimately showing that true love, no matter what type, must always be genuine by looking out for others. It also shows how you can’t rush into these sort of things. It’s about time and communication, not just following your heart. This is definitely a pretty good movie.

I loved this film so much, and seeing Chuckie go through quite the character arc is quite amazing. For a coward, he was very brave when he saved his dad, Chas from making the mistake of marrying Coco LaBouche.
