Amazing render, the purple colour is great too, and all the 2d looks awesome and fits the piece very well.

Thank you, I wasn't sure about the renders at first when putting them together, but i think they worked out good in the end. I'm glad you like it, the 2d better be fitting lol, spend almost as much time on just the 2d as the rest of the image itself, I wasnt sure if it was enough when i submitted it but, i think i stopped at the right time heh.

Holy crap! This is freakin amazing! Where'd you learn to do stuff like this? Seriously, Im thinking of switching from Cinema 4D to 3D Studio Max... and this definately pushed me even closer to the switch.

In this case, I don't think the 3d program which you use makes much of a difference. I have seen some amazing stuff come out of any 3d renderer, as long as they are used right. Even though I have never used Cinema 4d, I still believe It is quite capable in producing some astounding renders, which i cannot even conceive of doing in 3ds. This is probably due to my lack of 3ds experience, but it does show that it matters more in how you use the program to achieve your goals rather than which program is used. When I open up 3ds, I generally have a notion of what I want to get out of it. This is what I apply to what I do with it. I may use simple methods at times to achieve them, but they are what I want. The effects of noise in 3ds are still based on how you shape the object before the noise is applied. If your object is not right, then you will never achieve the kind of object you are looking for, no matter how many instances you look at. The second object rendered (the more close up one) I was trying to achieve that look with noise, but failed every time to produce it effectively. However, i instead created an edited nurbs object, and it fit my purpose more than any noise filtering could do. Nurbs is not something unique to 3ds, and i believe c4d is also capable of nurbs editing. So in the end it's usually best to have some sort of conception of why you opened the program and what you want to get out of it, rather than simply opening and letting random modifiers do the work for you. They are there to help you, not do it for you.
How'd I learn it? Well... pretty simple, i simply looked at some tutorials (i know, it's bad) in order to figure out what a few of 3ds's functions can do, after that i pretty much played around with the function until i could use them to my intention. I admit, i dont know much about the program, but hey, how many people immediately know everything about a program from the start? Every peice i do is sort of an experiment of styles for me. This experimentation helps me to develop techniques which i can use in my own conceptual style, even if it's abstract, i can still learn from it in the process of creating it. Just keep at it, and the better you'll get.
I duno if that makes sense, but if it does, thats the cognitive process i go through when cranking out a piece of art..

Makes plenty sense. I kinda went through the same process when learning photoshop. I Just started looking at tutorials and from there got an idea of what stuff does and then began to experiment and see what I could make through experimentation.
