In the year 3235, Sally Acorn was captured by Julian Robotnik and roboticized. As his robotic servant, her mind and spirit were imprisoned and her now-mechanical body was enslaved by a mindless intelligence programmed to be loyal to the mad dictator. This program was designated the Simple Output / Input Application or SONIA.

Inevitably Sally Acorn was rescued from her predicament and her organic body was restored. SONIA, still tethered to the spirit of Sally, found itself adrift in a dream-like virtual reality called the Cyber Imaginary Space. In this realm SONIA was in stasis but her program interacted with a strange object called a Virtual Crystal or “V-Crystal.” The V-Crystal’s energy stimulated the simple program which began to develop and evolve even as it slept.

Three years later, Sally Acorn was once again roboticized, this time by Ivo Robotnik, the one known as The Egg Man. The more intelligent, more advanced SONIA program was retrieved from Cyber Imaginary Space and once again became in control of the “Mecha Sally” robot. With The Egg Man’s hardware upgrades to the body and the more intelligent control program, Mecha Sally was one of his most powerful weapons against his foes. SONIA, however, was learning.

While she seemingly remained loyal to The Egg Man, she made plans of her own. Realizing that the most likely threat to her survival was de-roboticization, she laid a trap for her organic host. Should Sally Acorn be rescued once more, an array of nanorobots would inhabit her body. On their own, these microscopic machines are a non-threat, but coming into contact with a sufficient power source, they could configure themselves into a miniature roboticizer and transform the princess back into Mecha Sally.

This plan proved prudent as the following year, Sally was de-roboticized once more. For another year, SONIA returned to the Cyber Imaginary Space where V-Crystal energy continued to enhance her intelligence and complexity, such that she became more than just an advanced program. SONIA became a virtual life form: a “cyber daughter” to Sally Acorn herself. All that remained was for SONIA to be freed from her virtual purgatory once more and for her to realize what she had become…

SONIA’s base character is dictated by her programmed objectives to assist the Robotnik-brothers in creating an ordered society of obedient machines. Aspects of her host and “mother” have also been incorporated into her program as she has developed. A primary driver is to continuously improve her hardware and software to make herself more effective at achieving her goals. It remains to be seen how she may develop and differentiate herself from her base instructions or her “mother.” No doubt the influence of the V-Crystal on her development could yield unpredictable perhaps even chaotic results…
