Description Drawing referenced from one of *HeWhoWalksWithTigers 's photos [link]

This guy has done some incredible stuff for wildlife and the environment - you may have heard about the competition he was running a while back to help snow leopards, (and you may know how much I admire those cats ) but now is your chance to help him out in a comptetion of his own.
Simply watch this video [link]
Then, those of you with youtube accounts, rate it five to help him out
If you don't have a youtube account, then you can always make one...
read the news article [link] if you want to find out more, and remember to take a look at his photos

we can do it guys!

Drawn mostly with 2B, B, and HB mechanical pencils, and 2H and 4H pencils. Q-tips used for blending, and I also used a kneadable erasor to bring out some of the highlights. No indenting used in this one.
Drawn on A6 paper, so what you see on the screen is pretty much actual size. It took me about a week to do.

And yes, sorry for the slightly cheesy title - I'm saving 'Tyger, Tyger' for another one I hope to do in the future (if *HeWhoWalksWithTigers lets me use his wonderful photos again... )

haha, me neither anymore

half of these are from when I was at school and could just draw in lessons and teachers didn't care as long as I got the grades. Nowadays I actually have to work in (and out of) lectures and only get to draw in those rare weeks after exams and before the next pile of work hits me in the face. It's one of the reasons I really like things like FC since it forces me to not get bogged down in detail, and gives me an excuse to put each drawing aside after a couple of weeks and not feel bad because I could have done more work on it.

I must admit I do tend towards being a bit of a perfectionist(/completionist) with most things - especially drawings and video games!

I believe the answer is something along the lines of too much spare time, and too many maths lessons spent doodling

thanks. I'm thinking of doing a few more this size - closeups and such. It's nice to be able to do a drawing in just a few days and not spend so long grinding away getting it done that I hate it by about halfway through

iduck In reply to squanpie [2010-01-25 01:39:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, in that sense smaller is sometimes better, especially when you have a short attention span

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squanpie In reply to iduck [2010-01-26 18:05:12 +0000 UTC]

attention span has to be split between too many things these days - college, applying to uni, music, more music, yet more music, comic (hopefully more news on that one when I actually get the thing going), haven't done much drawing at all recently.

how're things going on the work/home front for you now? calmed down a bit at all?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iduck In reply to squanpie [2010-02-02 02:40:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh you have your own comic too? I'd love to see it! Sounds like you're really busy too!

Uhm, calmed down a little in the sense that the home thing is settling down. And work is getting slower too. I might just take a week off to get a kick-start on the comic, so that'll be great

squanpie In reply to iduck [2010-02-03 21:16:17 +0000 UTC]

well I'll be posting it on another account, but I'll post links when I post the first few pages - hopefully sometime around easter.
well good luck getting things going! I can't wait to see what you're working on

thanks
ironically that part of the image was one of the easiest. Took longer than most of the rest, but it's just texturing, so once you get into the rhythm of it, it just flows (the way I do it anyway)

AzureEcho [2009-12-01 16:16:38 +0000 UTC]

One word comes to mind: Amazing. The level of realism is so striking, I never thought I'd live to see something as beautiful as this! And the fact that I love tigers doesn't really change that fact

I'm curious: How do you draw the lighter strands of fur, like the longer ones above the eye?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

squanpie In reply to AzureEcho [2009-12-01 18:19:37 +0000 UTC]

thanks! tigers are definately awesome

in this drawing I simply left them white. I marked out very lightly where they'd go, and erased the marks as I got to drawing that area. I then cleaned up the space with an erasor, and carefully drew up to the edges of where I wanted the lighter hair. I think I then went back anf adjusted the tone slightly in places - after all, they may be very light, but they still need to have form.

I was asked a similar question here: [link] where I explained mroe about other methods as well, if you're interested

AzureEcho In reply to squanpie [2009-12-02 19:49:57 +0000 UTC]

Indeed

Ah, I see! You really need to be nitpicking and careful, since the hairs are so damn thin and all, huh?

Thank you! It's always great to learn new techniques, I'll definitely try all of it out sometime

squanpie In reply to AzureEcho [2009-12-02 20:27:02 +0000 UTC]

yup, but then that's the story with anything in this style

no problem it's nice to be able to pass along what I've learnt
