considering how much of my life has been spent playing Bravely Default, its amazing I haven't done any fanart yet.oh wait, all of the designs make my head explode from either over-complexity or over-awesomeness. that's why.
MINOR SPOILERS!
Bravely Default is a game of "fews" for me: its one of the few games that I maxed out my party on everything, its one of the few games that I did every single pointless side quest, its one of the few games that I actually enjoyed watching the love between two characters. the relationship between Alternis and Edea, as well as their contrasting personalities, was endlessly entertaining for me. especially since im pretty dang sure that Edea doesn't love Alternis as anything more than a brother, whereas he is absolutely obsessed with her. I do enjoy a good, cruel story...
Alternis is definitely one of my favorite characters in the game, mainly because he is what a dark knight should be, rather than just an evil weirdo with black armor on steroids. he has the typical past full of pain and hatred, has a temper that often leads him to act violently, and is single-mindedly obsessed with whatever task is set before him. yet underneath all that he is one of the most compassionate characters in the game. loyal to a fault and madly in love, he always strives to do better purely so if the need arises, he can defend his lord and love with his life.

this picture. has driven me insane. for the last 10 days. I couldn't find any concept art that had Alternis looking the exact same way, so I had to do a lot of guess work. Edea was pretty fun, although I had trouble getting her details right due to the pose I have her in. I was having a lot of trouble making them stand out from one another, as originally they both looked really shiny. then I realized I needed to dull and darken Alternis's armor, and it finally fell into place.
I tried to implement part of Bravely Default's art style into the piece, i.e. simple faces and lush, strong shading and highlights. despite all the challenges I faced, like failures in anatomy and a never-ending nightmare of detailing to work out, this picture helped me out when I was in a real rut. I haven't been feeling all that confident in a lot of what I've been drawing lately, and when art block was holding me down, I used this as a way to climb back up.

Alternis is definitely my favorite character from Bravely Default.
Hopefully Bravely Second will be released next year.

the battle system is one of the most profound and deep turn-based strategies I have ever seen, being able to possibly act four times per turn for each character opens up whole realms of possibilities. it does fall flat in some areas, such as completely blowing any and all chances of open-world exploration, but it is still on of the best games I've played in a long time.

Oh god when I found out that Alternis was *insert MAJOR spoiler here*, I think a part of me just died. Oh that poor guy! It hurts even worse when he and a ...certain other character are two of my favorite characters in the whole game. ALSO THIS LOOKS AMAZING.

OH GOSH I KNOW! it just twisted my heart, discovering all that he had been through. while it wasn't exactly the most subtle of plot twists (the game practically throws the idea at you as soon as you unlock d's journal) I still think that watching alternis slowly returning to himself as you progress through the game was endlessly fascinating and heartbreaking. one of the hardest moments in the game for me was that optional fight in chapter 6, when you watch him go mad from loss.

Right? It's just so sad! But yeah, it wasn't too sublte was it? And it was really interesting to see him slowly regain his sanity(I use sanity loosely) over time.
Oh god, the chapter 6 battle. The worst part was when he asked Edea to marry him! And she completely friendzoned him! That just felt like a punch in the gut.

XD it certainly wasn't sympathetic of Edea, but considering she is only 15 whereas Alternis is 20, (changed in the English release to make it less creepy) it's not incomprehensible.
but I did notice something: Grand Marshal Braev also grew up Mahzer all his life, also was five years her senior, and proposed to her when she was still very young. considering how much Alternis idolizes Braev, it's probable that he is trying to mimic how Braev built up his family. that said, he is failing to account for Edea's feelings, another trait he seems to have adopted from Braev.

no, if you take the eastern path to Central Command (cant fly to it), there is a little area called... I think it was Gravemark Village. its where Braev and Mahzer grew up, and there is an old man there who talks about their past and the Great Plague. also, in the later chapters, there is an old man standing in the east part of Eternian City called the Gossipmonger. he talks about the love triangle between Braev, Mahzer, and Kamiizumi. both of them are pretty long winded, but both are full of tidy bits of info and backstory. despite its failure in plot twists, I really love how the game gives you the option to piece together the recent history of Luxendarc and its struggles.

Oh yeah! I went to that guy! I probably didn't catch the whole "age difference" part. I do love how the game leaves it up to you to listen to Luxendarcs' struggles(which I did). Also, off topic I know,but am I the only one who didn't skip any of DeRosso's dialogue? I feel like a lot of people did. It has a lot of interesting little bits about the origin of Anticrystalism and the forming of Eternia.

XD I seriously love DeRosso's character, he is what an immortal should be like: often bored out of his skull.
I enjoyed his monologues, they add even more history to the game. so no, you are not the only one who didn't skip through it.

but that's really weird! i think it's artwork from that spinoff game Praying Bradge (or somefink like that) which takes place in a world where the crystals went boom, but still! why would they put something like that in? now i really want Bravely Second out to see if they use this in any way...
and suddenly i had the horrific mental image of DeRosso reborn as a cyborg. XD

yeah, on the outside it looks like a huge world to explore, but they force you around from one place to the next which started to really irk me after a while.

actually, there is an item, a ridiculously expensive item, that doubles EXP in exchange for giving up money. and then you have the option to increase encounter rate, change the difficulty setting, put battles on auto mode (repeats whatever the last actions where in the previous battle/turn), and also an ability that instantly kills any enemies that are 20 levels lower than you. so when you get to around level 60+ (which is usually around chapter 6 for me), grinding becomes incredibly easy, not to mention necessary due to the final boss's habit of using AOE attacks.

hmm, it doesn't force you really, it just doesn't allow you to go anywhere other than a predetermined path. you can screw around all you want, just so long its in a certain area.
