The Stone by: Starwolf160
Chapter 3 I realized that I hadn’t even tried to do one of the things that was one of the most popular descriptor of a dragon. I hadn’t tried to breathe fire.
“I don’t know. I haven’t tried yet.” I replied. “This is as good a place as any for trying.”
“Everybody clear a path. I don’t want anyone to get burnt” Alex called.
“Let’s do this” I said. I thought about breathing the red flower, and I got this weird feeling in a spot in between my lungs, and then something shot up my throat, and there was a spark as I opened my mouth. When I opened up, a bright orange fire came out, and Alex and Tommy had to back up so they wouldn’t get singed.
“THAT WAS AWESOME‼” the little kid yelled. “I wish that I was a dragon.”
“Maybe one day” I said as I ruffled his hair. I saw that his parents flinched as I touched him.
‘Ugh. Why won’t these people understand that I don’t want to hurt anyone?’ I thought.
“Let’s jump in the water” John said. “There’s been too much heat and tension.”
“Right behind you” I called.
I ran to the water, and as soon as I slipped in, I noticed something. For some reason, I had gills on the side of my neck. I tried to inhale the water, but ended up surfacing and hacking it right back out. I went and tried again, this time, I got it right though. The water flowed through my gills, and I felt as though I had breathed fresh air.
“Hey guys! How about a breath holding contest? Whoever can hold their breath the longest wins!” I said, knowing the perfect way to showcase my new ability.
Alex walked up to one of the other people there, “Would you time our breath holding contest?”
“Sure” they said.
All six of us went into the water, and the timer said “Ready! Set! GO!”
We sank beneath the water, and began to hold our breath. We were all facing each other, and I opened the corners of my muzzle to let the water in. John went up first, at around 20 seconds. Then Nolan surfaced at around 30 seconds. Gavin went to the top at somewhere near 50 seconds, and Tommy went up for air close 65 seconds. Alex lasted the longest, staying in for almost 90 seconds. I was the last one in the water, and made them wait another 2 minutes before I went up.
“Wyatt the dragon wins the contest, at 3 minutes and 32 seconds. Alex the human came in second at 1 minute and 28 seconds. Tommy the human came in third at 1 minute and 3 seconds. Congratulations, Wyatt, you are the winner!” The judge pronounced.
“Well, not really. Alex actually held his breath the longest.” I corrected him, even though he had no way of knowing that I had cheated.
“Um, Wyatt, I think 3 and a half minutes is longer than 1 and a half…” Alex said worriedly.
“It is, but I wasn’t playing fair.”
At this, I flared my gills, and Alex’s face morphed into a look that said ‘really’ in a sarcastic tone.
“Thanks for making me waste my breath, you dumb beast” Alex said, angrily.
“What was that for? There’s no need for name calling. I was just trying to show you guys something cool in a funny kind of way.” I said.
“Yeah, yeah. Real funny. Making me think that we were having a fair contest, but in reality, it’s just a way to show us that you’re a fish now. Great job Wyatt.” Alex retorted. He then threw a punch at my right arm, doing what some people call frogging. It’s where you punch someone, but your middle finger’s second knuckle is stuck out, as to deliver maximum pain to the recipient. I think it hurt him more than it hurt me, but I decided to not let him think that
“Oh, okay. If that’s how you want to play.” I countered. “I can play rough.”
I took to the sky, and in my best evil dragon voice (which was quite menacing) I said “Alexander Kaze. You have made your last foolish move, puny human. This is your last hour.”
“Oh really? I think you’re just a big scaly wimp. You wouldn’t harm a fly!”
I swooped down, and threw a punch at his face, stopping just in front of his face. There was a collective gasp from the crowd, who now had all of their attention focused on us. It was beautiful. Our friends had seen this before.
“I told you” Alex said, as he stared me right in the eye. “Admit that you cheated, and I won’t knock you on the ground.”
“I’ve already said that I cheated, and I acknowledge you as the rightful winner of the Breath Holding Contest.”
We stood there glaring at each other, barely containing the laughter. I started to giggle, then Alex began as well, and soon, we were full on laughing. Everyone who didn’t know us was very confused.
One of the people asked us angrily “What the heck just happened? The guy that punched looked ready to kill the dragon, and the dragon looked like he was about to die. Then all of a sudden you both started to laugh!”
“You see, Alex here is the older twin by 2 minutes. Shocker, right? I’m obviously more mature. Anyways, we do this kind of thing all of the time. He punches me, then we get into a mock argument. It’s a good way to let out a little anger and not hurt anyone. Plus, it’s great to see everyone’s faces when they think us twins are about to be at each other’s throat. Even better now that I’m a dragon.” I explained.
“Your face was priceless. Too bad we couldn’t have gotten a picture.” Alex said. “We often do this, and it’s really funny to see people think that we are going to start throwing punches at each other.”
Some of the other guests grumbled about this, and some of them finally caught on that it was a joke, and smiled as they went about their business. I remembered how the cool water felt as it rushed over my scales. As I thought about this, I unconsciously walked over to the water, and slipped in. I sat near the water fall, and felt the cool water rushing past my scales, and relaxed in the river.
“Man, you really like the water, don’t you?” Alex asked, as he saw my expression.
“Ya. There’s just something really calming about this water slipping past my scales. You’d have to be a dragon to understand.” I replied.
“Okay. Anyway, we’re going to leave in half an hour.”
The trail that we had followed started in the same place as the short trail that led to the parking lot, and so this was the end of our hike. I started to feel a little nervous coming home to my parents, and all of my other friends. School was going to be a lot of fun this year, but luckily, I won’t have to deal with all of the things that Ethan Compass did when he went to his college. People already know that dragons exist.
Still, I would be the first at our school, and I have no idea how some of my peers and teachers will react, because of the whole conservative thing of the south vs. the contemporary thing of the north. I guess I’ll have to deal with that when the time comes. First is my parents, and coworkers.
