Description Is this "fan art"? well, yes, I suppose it is...

However "2001:a Space Odyssey" is probably my greatest inspiration - so this was kind of a hobby project and a labor of love.

The design & the imagery are copyrighted to (I believe) MGM
(I have to put that in there ...)

It's probably fan art... But really do you want to see it in the middle of millions of ponies ? 2001 deserve better than this

Yeah, mine too. It's one of those very rare timeless Sci-fi movies. If I had to shoot it today I wouldn't change much.

I agree! Maybe the hats on the stewardesses and a few things like that. But it's scary how well that film holds up, technically and conceptually too

Wonderful. Again, it's reads like a perfect homage to the original shot. I love that deep blue ambient light and your "interior projections" are... "perfectly flawed" It sure looks like you've accurately copied the greeblie detail.

I was going to try and model the interior, and light it. But I had to settle for a pasted together plate made from frame grabs !

I definitely didn't exactly match every tiny detail, but I did try to match the overall feel. In studying the frames I had as reference, I realized that in some cuts the image of the ship is reversed. Not so you'd notice, but if you're trying to match the placement of small ports and things, you find they flipped the ship in more than one instance. It was interesting detective work

Well the details match well enough with what I had in memory, so it's fine by me!

Thanks! It was a challenge to try and match the lighting. In making the attempt, I discovered that CG light doesn't behave like real light at all lol!

They used a single key light (on their miniatures) and a very low fill light. To match the look, I had to have 3 lights for the sun - otherwise it didn't wrap the sphere quite the same way.

Yeah I'm gonna have to tackle texturing and lighting in time. Good info though..
