Description Is this "fan art"? well, yes, I suppose it is...

However "2001:a Space Odyssey" is probably my greatest inspiration - so this was kind of a hobby project and a labor of love.

This angle matches a frame from the film...

The design & the imagery are copyrighted to (I believe) MGM
(I have to put that in there ...)

Another artist did one of the ORION-III Clipper titled "NASA One". Couldn't very well call it Air Force One, though maybe Aerospace One? But no. It sounds geeky. Great Job. Wish NASA had made an TSTO like that with the shuttles, and a fully reusable ARIES I-A and I-B lunar Shuttle. The IA as a dedicated cargo hauler, and the IB as a mixed passenger cargo transport. We'd still be a space-faring nation. Great Job.

The main engines, the design was used on the Nostromo tug i believe. Great render.

2001-2010 those designs could easily fit into the Alien movie universe. Did they base the Omegas from B5 on the Leanov?

steve-burg In reply to Richard-Daborn [2011-12-31 01:24:08 +0000 UTC]

I don't know much about the design process of those ships (the B5 Omegas) - but the configuration is so close it can't be a coincidence. I think the ships from 2001 and 2010 - and Space:1999 as well - have a lot of believability. That's something I think is missing in a lot of spaceships - the feeling that it is something that could really work.

I don't know if you have Sketchup or not (it's free), but I actually made a Leonov and one of the 2010 pods and posted them on 3D warehouse. Here are links to them:

Yes i have sketchup, thanks for the links! Ive used Sketchup briefly on one of my designs however I only used it once. Thanks Steve.

Oh my god no! I had a window of time when I wasn't doing a project, so this called to me I can't remember exactly, but it was a good solid week of focused effort. A lot of redos and different versions. I was going to do an interior too - but I was kind of burnt out by the time I got the landing gear rigged (they articulate).

that sounds like a lot of fun , working on a model you love so much . i've had a few projects that i've really been into , but not like one model that means something to me deeply or is symbolic in that kind of way . well , everyone has a summer , they say .

There are certain things that I just love, because of what they represented to me when I first encountered them. I feel like most of my own artwork is kind of "re-stating" these themes. It's very subjective - but but a great "energy source"

all of my inspirations drown in the wake of individuals and time , leaving comfort being an abstract and brief memory . a tangible muse would be interesting . maybe that's why some people have gods . possibly consider yourself lucky

Change can be difficult (I tend to travel mostly in my imagination), but it can be good. Some people never leave their home town, or home state. Having a lot of different experiences can give you a very rich background to draw on. It's mind expanding

It was quite a challenge - I became a hermit for at least a week
My first thought was "oh, it's just a sphere - how tough can it be?" But it reached a point where I decided "I've come this far, I might as well try and really do this properly"

It was a lot of fun, and I really came to admire (even more so) the depth of thought that went into in this classic design

Beautiful, and that camera shot is immediately recognizable. I'm glad you went ahead and responded to my "you should post these" nudge. Beautiful model, Steve - though as you say, the original holds up so amazing well that 3D models have a tough time matching the realistic intricacies and subtle weathering of the original.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

steve-burg In reply to RobCaswell [2010-08-23 04:29:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, this model still has no texture to speak of

Cg - while being great and all that - is still not able to equal a fully realized and expertly lit model.

The long shot of the Discovery moving past the camera - every little tube is casting a small bounce light. CG is not there yet - not for something like that. The algorithms and sampling parameters for radiosity can still only give an approximation of that kind of nuance.

I like Lightwave. I've used various other software, but I can just get a nice result from Lightwave with less trouble. It has a very nice renderer. I'm not trying to win an Academy Award - I just want to quickly get to a decent image without a lot of jumping through hoops !

Maybe some day I will finish the moonbus. I have it basically made, but it needs all of the small details.

***sigh*** Time...

And really, I'm mostly trying to focus on original works - although it's a lot of fun to try and recreate something classic, I must say

I'm really wanting to do some original designs, but I'm using a Star Trek ship as a learning curve, as it covers modelling, texturing and lighting. I'm also considering building a Battlestar Valkyrie for fun at some point... I really liked the design of that one.

These are Lightwave. I have Modo, but haven't had time to really learn it well enough yet.

But man - is it unbelievable for baking texture maps ! Just pull the trigger and it makes a whole stack of them as a psd...
