Description It’s that time of year when I try to describe something that is truly indescribable. I want to do something different this time and paint (literally) a picture of the love that I have for an amazing woman. Today marks our 20th anniversary and I couldn’t think of a better way of honoring this than to paint something from the heart.
One of my favorite quotes I’ve ever read was from an Italian painter named Elio Carletti who defined beauty. The full quote reads “Beauty is a summation of the parts where nothing is needed to be altered, added, or taken away.” I believe the summation is made up of two parts, inner and outer beauty. The inner being the most important because beauty permeates outward and in turn beautifies what is on the surface.

The tree represents the surface and what everyone sees at face value, it is how you see Lori and I treat one another, our actions, speech, and mannerism. The roots are the bond, the heart of the marriage and what I believe is the key to any successful union. It is the foundation and lifeline to the beauty on the surface. The roots are the love and support we give one another. Trees can withstand a lot of punishment if the roots are strong and deep. They can be completely engulfed in flames, submerged underwater and come back beautiful as if nothing ever happened.

In our 25 years of being with one another we’ve had our fair share of pain, loss and hardship. Our roots never changed because they are deep and well nurtured to withstand the storms that have passed through our lives. There was a time when Lori and I literally lost just about everything and it only made our bond stronger. On the other side of the spectrum, we’ve had so much joy, happiness, love and support. This painting pales in comparison to the love that we have for one another.

Lori has been my strength when I was weak, my compass when I was lost, and my support when none could be found. I’ve been with her 9,125 days and I never tire being in her presence. Her very existence sweetens my soul.
So yes, Elio Carletti defined beauty perfectly. It is how I view Lori and the love that we share.
Happy Anniversary Lori Goad, here’s to another 20 more.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin has a beautiful (albeit a little cliche and cheesy) description of love being a tangle of roots. This is beautiful.

Reading the description just made the painting infinitely better.
So many people take their relationship for granted, bless you for loving your wife so deeply.
