Bacon pranced along the path as Ruqio led him to the prep area at the Santa Anita racetrack. Ruqio, seeming not to notice the big horse nearly stepping on his toes every few steps, continued on past the other horses until he reached their slot. As Ruqio turned Bacon into his spot, he was joined by Bacon's owner, Elysa, who had just come up from the barn area with some of Bacon's tack slung over her shoulder.
"How's our dressage pony doing?" Elysa asked as she placed the tack on the stall divider to their left. Bacon continued to shift his weight around as she asked this.
"He's acting like a stallion surrounded by pretty fillies, that's what," Ruqio said as he got the big stallion to stand still long enough for him to tie his lead rope around his neck.
"What a show off," Elysa said as she gave Bacon a rub on his forehead. "But here, maybe this will chill him out."
Elysa pulled a brightly colored, donut shaped chewie toy out of the bag she had brought that she then showed to Bacon. The toy was complete with decals that looked like frosting and sprinkles.
"Is that... a dog chewie toy?" Ruqio asked as he leaned around to see what Elysa was referring to.
"Not just any dog chewie toy. A rubber chewie toy that looks like a donut," Elysa said with a giggle. "Now he can hopefully stop destroying your shirt sleeves."
It didn't take long for Bacon to get a hold of the donut, and, as he begin gnawing, his feet slowly stopped prancing about and he came to a stand still. Bacon then stood, contented, with a big donut hanging from his mouth.
"...Where has this donut been all my life?" Ruqio said in astonishment.
"Thank the clearance section at Petsmart," Elysa laughed as she gave Bacon another rub on the forehead. Not wanting to waste any of the precious time of Bacon not being a prancy mess, Ruqio brushed him down and tacked him up. After struggling for a couple minutes of trying to get the donut back out of Bacon's mouth so that he could put the bit in, Ruqio stood back to do one last tack check.
"Well, I think we're ready," Ruqio said. A few more minutes passed as the other racers filed in around them and got ready.
"Looks like a pretty tough field today," Elysa commented as a stunning black splash stallion and a bay mare with a red hood passed in front of them.
"Oh yeah," Ruqio nodded. "There are some strong starters here. Bacon's gonna have to at least pretend like he can behave for a few minutes if he wants to place."
"Ain't that the truth," A voice said from off to the left. It was Seattle, Bacon's jockey, who had just arrived.
"What, you finally decided to show up for work?" Ruqio joked.
"I mean, I almost ditched this gig to grab a margarita from the place upstairs, so I guess you got lucky today," Seattle said with a shrug.
"Thank you for your incredible sacrifice," Elysa laughed.
"Ok, you ready to roll?" Ruqio asked, bringing back everyone's focus.
"Yeah, I'm all set. Let's check Bacon's girth again, though. Looks like he might have been bloating a bit... wait. Is that.... is that a donut?" Seattle asked, perplexed after seeing the weird thing hanging from Bacon's mouth.
"Three dollars at Petsmart," Elysa said with a smirk.
"Well dang," Seattle commented after seeing how calm Bacon was. "Why didn't we think of that?" He asked in a slightly hushed tone, turning toward Ruqio.
"Because then it would have probably cost, like, $30 not on sale and that would have been just ridiculous." Ruqio said as he tightened Bacon's girth then began leading him out of the stall.
"This horse has won, what, 67k in the last year, and we can't get him a $30 chewie?" Seattle laughed.
"Don't tell your boss what to do," Ruqio said with a laugh, giving away his faked seriousness. Seattle shook his head and laughed as Elysa helped him mount up.
"Good luck, kid," Elysa said as she gave Seattle a reassuring pat on the boot. "I'll be cheering you on from upstairs with a margarita in my hand."
"Oh don't you dare," Seattle said with a laugh as he spun around in his saddle to face Elysa who was now behind them. "If I see race photos of you with a margarita in your hand, I'll mutiny," He said pointing at Elysa. Elysa backed away slowly with a smirk on her face while shooting finger guns at Seattle before turning around towards the stands. As Ruqio lead Seattle and Bacon away towards the track, Ruqio wriggled the donut out of Bacon's mouth and looped his left arm through it. Bacon, at first not happy that his toy was taken away again, began to realize where they were headed, and began to hone in on the track before them. As they reached the track, Ruqio handed them off to the team that was to pony them to the gate. Ruqio gave Seattle the customary sideways high-five followed by a fist bump as they passed, and then he headed off to join Elysa in the stands.

And here's the first race in Bacon's three year old season! He's looking a lot less lanky than he did last season. They grow up so fast. :'D
