Description hohoho, i've been drawing like there is no tomorrow. another one of Beautiful Ghosts Around the World series is here, the sixth one: Manananggal.

Manananggal is a mythology from Philippines. she's not exactly a ghost; she's more like a witch woman who feeds on pregnant women's blood to keep her black magic power. one of the stories explains that she goes out on feeding only during full moon. during the day and nights of non-full-moon, she looks like a regular, beautiful woman.

her name, Manananggal, is loosely translated as "one who detached", which describes her look when she turns into a Manananggal: her upper body detaches itself from her lower body and she flies with a huge bat wings looking for her prey. then she sucks the blood of the fetus in a pregnant woman's womb using her proboscis tongue...

if she doesn't go back and attach herself to her lower-half of the body before daybreak, supposedly, the Manananggal would be killed.

the previous BGAW are: Kuntilanak , Yuki Onna , Huli Jing , Lamia and Glaistig .

i still have one more to go and, hopefully, it'll be up before the end of the week.

Manananggals are supposed to wear baro't sayas,a philippine dress,or a long dress.

Thanks for doing one from the Philippines.

I like your rendition of the Manananggal. "Manananggal" literally means "One who removes" from the root word "Tanggal" which means to remove or separate, which, as we can see from what she does, is appropriate. There are versions from Malaysia and Thailand, yes, because of migration between our countries way back before the Spaniards came in the 16th story, so we got their folklore too.

Good job!

no problem

yeah, there are many folklores like this in Indonesia, too... although instead of detaching from the waist up, they detach from neck up. similar stories

Me: Hmmm, I never thought manananggals were witches or ghosts. I always thought they were more like vampires. Still I love this piece because it seems like most of the depiction of Manananggals I come across have her as some grotesque thing XP

Awesome. I really like this one - the colors are very nice. I like how you bring back all of these ghosts from the dead. [laughs] I am sure they appreciate that they haven't been forgotten!

Nicely done. I live in the Philippines, and this ghost scared me back when I was young. Some say when you found the lower part of the body, put some salt on it so that the Manananggal won't be able to attach herself again.

OOOh!
I've heard of this one, though I'm not sure it was a version from the Phillipines

Certainly is a sinister creature in any case though

oh yeah, there are also similar witch stories from Malaysia and Indonesia, although they're known by different names. and i think the biggest difference between those are the ones from Malaysia and Indonesia detach from the neck and carry the entrails with it, leaving the body (neck down) without head and entrails. this version is much harder to draw and keep the figure looking, ehm, beautiful... hehe.

Those are the kind I've heard of, yes. I believe there's a Russian version as well.

And this version is definately more attractive

brazilian mythology is full of creatures... Your female ghosts remembers me the "Loira do Banheiro" (translating = Bathroom blonde lady - or something like this)...

you really have been drawing a lot of these beautiful ghosts lately!

out of all the stories i've read about the different ghosts you've done, this seems to be the most evil to me.

great use of colour, makes me think of a dragon, especially with the wings. the de-tatched body is pretty cool too !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sun2197 In reply to jojoba [2007-01-18 12:45:47 +0000 UTC]

yeah, she's definitely the most evil one so far. and since her target is women, she scares me more than the other ghosts i drew (they all tease men...).
