Description Phew this was great practice
On 28th of November I had my mind set on finishing 100 studies of materials. Never knew I was able to finish.
I learned so much about materials, reflection, lighting, colors etc. I would recommend such a practice to anyone.
I started saving the references somewhere halfway so if you would like to have that file for your own practice purposes go to this FB link, click options and than download
www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi…

Thanks to these studies, I was able to paint these:

The thing I know to take account is how light behaves on matter. Sounds easy to say, tho I guess the true challenge is to apply it.

This is very inspiring, both in terms of quantity and quality. I definitely need to do this, painting different materials is one of my many weaknesses.

Also, the little fly sitting on the poo ball gave me a laugh.

I don't suppose you have a written list of all the materials? I can tell what most of them are, but Id like to do my own studies, this is really getting me into the mood of doing it hehe

Hi Suzanne ! Amazing Job you did there. Last week I had this intern test and my work was turned down. I was feeling a little depressed and came across your journals. It's really Inspiring and motivating ! I'm going to start my own practices. I have a question though, did you paint this in grayscale first or directly in color?
Thank you for making those journals!

Suzanne-Helmigh In reply to Karenauau [2015-03-25 05:36:37 +0000 UTC]

We all go through hundreds of turn down before we get a yes don't feel bummed out too much ^^
these were done in colour right away but i think you'd still learn great things while doing them in greyscale.

Did you plan the different materials before you started or did you choose materials as they came to your mind?

I'm trying to study materialsmaterials but its so hard and reference won't help me if I dont understand the surface properties. Resources to learn the shiny dull flat reflective properties please??

MarinaOrtega [2014-08-22 12:15:09 +0000 UTC]

It's awesome! I come to check this practice more than once, because I really like how you finished them and even the overall composition of all If I can ask, how do you like to paint materials and textures? Do you prefere to use a lot of customized brushes or do you prefer to use more common brushes painting closer to the traditional way with a bit of custom ones only? Keep these good practices!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Suzanne-Helmigh In reply to MarinaOrtega [2014-08-22 12:55:57 +0000 UTC]

I only needed about 5 different ones for all of these together.
I see no point in making it harder to keep with one brush, it was all about being able to paint the material in as little as time as possible without loosing the information of it. As long as it's all hand painted, with whatever type of brushes (crunchy-spray-soft etc) it's a great excersize.
It's a skill needed even when doing photobashed images in other projects, this way you can fix materials by painting them because this study teaches you how materials work
(lol this was more talk than you asked for XD )

MarinaOrtega In reply to Suzanne-Helmigh [2014-08-22 17:44:35 +0000 UTC]

Perfect!Thank you for taking your time answering me. It's an issue in which I have no fixed habits, sometimes I try too much brushes and don't find which I want, and another I use one or two, and later I notice I should have used more, hehe, so I am trying to review this kind of exercise. And yes, definitely it would help with a lot of kind of works, from colorful illustration to realistic photobashing. Thank you, Suzanne! Congrats for all your nice work.
