It's actually not as bad as him refusing to take Ozai out (thus ending the war), then turning around and demanding that Aang, the 12 year old monk, do the dirty deed for him. Seriously, moral dissonance much?

I shall agree to that XP though if he took Ozai out before hand none of the other stuff would've happened! *sweat drop*

What, Aang ripping Ozai's soul apart? Yeah, that's a much better end for the guy.

Yeh. Jet suffered, and now Zuko has to suffer! PAYBACK. -evil laugh- Of course, he ends up being good, so I'm sure all the angry Avatards have forgiven him...Maybe. xD

I haven't! (mainly for that dippy "Love and Peace" line - "yes, let's all just forget about the last 100 years of genocide, m'kay?")
At the very least, Azula knew how to emasculate the leaders of other countries and use their forces to her advantage.

I agree. We were duped as far as season 3 goes. And I could KILL Zuko for going back to Mai...But that's only because I always shipped Zutara before Mai even came along...I would've preferred to see Mai and Jet at least interact ONCE. It would've given the show some snarky dialogue to look forward to!

I actually think Mai and Zuko deserve each other, the way things turned out. Especially since I get to use Jet to point out how contrived and demeaning it is -> [link]
But if I were to rant: "I probably would have loved Maiko if it had developed OVER TIME in the series. Instead of front-loading Maiko, have them dance around each other, hinting, never quite committing, culminating in a moral crisis where Zuko, who doesn't know for certain Mai loves him, goes off to join the GAang, leaving behind a bittersweet letter saying everything he didn't have the courage to say before then. And then, if Mai went to confront him at the Boiling Rock and said, "I'm saving you because I love you, you thick-headed dumbass" it would have been EPIC. But no, they didn't do that - they pronounced Maiko canon without any character development and expected us to accept that."
And people wonder why I said the Good Crack!Ship MaixJet.

I've taken what you've said into mind a lot, and as a result, I'm changing Jet's role in the story a bit as far as his relationship with Azula. Thank you for the advice, dear!

I love how everyone hated Zuko after the Season 2 finale.
In the long run though, it's probably for the best. I mean, in all the other seasons, Aang didn't start Firebending from the beginning, so it wouldn't have been right to do so in season 3.
Not to mention it would kind of break up the two points of view that the show stuck to for most of the series.

That was my initial reaction too. But if anything, now I'm more angry at Iroh. Why was it okay for Zuko to capture the Avatar in season one and then suddenly Iroh says "time to choose good, Zuko." Where did that come from? He never talked to Zuko about the Fire Nation being wrong for taking over the world before . . .?

BrunetteMenolly In reply to sylvacoer [2010-05-20 02:32:24 +0000 UTC]
He SAW the Avatar in Episode 2. Was he really that passive a character to not have any opinion on the return of the Master of the Elements? He never even helped Zuko try to capture him. (But we know as early as "The Waterbending Scroll" that he was probably in the Lotus Society- which supported the Avatar and the unity/balance of the four nations, right . . .?)
In fact, in Season 2, Iroh seemed content to stay in Ba Sing Se and run his tea shop, oblivious to the world AT WAR around him. And then when his NIECE presents a BLOODLESS way to conquer the city that he failed to conquer by siege just a few years prior, he says, oh, no, this won't do. What REASONS does he give to not let his own Nation infiltrate the city? I repeat, where does he ever talk to Zuko about the war being wrong? The war HE fought in?
You have to choose "good" Zuko. (a vague term, mixed in with equally vague emotional appeal) This needs to be less about personal issues and more about what is RIGHT. Or, as Iroh puts it, "GOOD."
As far as Zuko having empathy, early on at least we know he is not cruel. Once again, IN EPISODE 2, he could have marked Zhao once he defeated him in the Agni Kai. Then, in "The Storm" he learns that he needs to put the safety of his crew in higher regard.
And as you point out, in "The Cave of Two Lovers," the look he gives Song, imo, does not only hold surprise, but empathy. And "Zuko Alone" was a telling episode into this part of his character. (The memories paralleling Lee's loss of his brother and loss of Lu Ten in particular) He is most certainly not a lead brick. He is a "complicated" and "conflicted" young man, as Iroh says.

Exactly. Iroh was on the seas with Zuko for two years prior to meeting up with the Avatar. Up until then, he had every reason to believe that Zuko would never find him. And once Iroh confirmed the Avatar's return, he had every reason to NOT help, but every reason to try and keep Zuko alive (because he loved him), often in spite of Zuko's best efforts.
And Iroh didn't want the Fire Nation to conquer Ba Sing Se because of a change of heart - his son was KILLED on the wall, and he realized that that was the last sacrifice he was willing to make. He REPENTED. He also didn't want his batshit insane niece or the MIND-CONTROLLING DAI LI to head the occupation.
And Zuko knew what choice he was making in the catacombs - he KNEW his sister was evil, always lied, and was cruel and sadistic to the point of psychopathy. He KNEW the Dai Li were the brutal instruments of a corrupt, totalitarian regime. He KNEW what the Fire Nation Army would do to the city once they occupied it (crush all rebellion, enslave the people, put earthbenders in concentration camps , etc.) AND STILL HE CHOSE TO SIDE WITH HIS SISTER, DESPITE HAVING SPENT MONTHS AMONG THE VERY PEOPLE HIS NATION WAS SETTING OUT TO ANNIHILATE. It's called free will and consequence. He chose poorly.
I also call Zuko a "lead brick" because in season 3, when he had the chance to kill Ozai, he didn't take it. Fine, patricide's ugly. But then he turns around and tries to make AANG, the monk who eschews violence and killing to the point that he refuses to eat animal to KILL HIS FATHER FOR HIM. Moral dissonance much?

wow... this brings back memories. I remember feeling the exact same way... I also felt terribly embarrassed for being a previous Zuko fangirl, and (as my siblings mocked me) a Zutarian.
But at least it ended (prettymuch) well, Zuko came back, and even Jet's alive! (owaitwut?)
