Description >Totally Brutal!<

Another metal inspired corset - you knew there would be more than one, right, with all the cool fabric I found lately? There's going to be more, trust me...

I bought this skull fabric on a whim - I think I was planning on making a skirt out of it. But, alas, corsets called (again). I didn't want to use the whole, busy pattern for it all, though, and I was poking around, and had to clean to get at a couple of things, and found a whole friggin' bolt of black PVC vinyl!

Heck yeah!

The outer corset is made out of 100% cotton for the print, and PVC vinyl for the other parts. The main inner body of the corset is made out of coutil. Down the front is an industrial metal zipper, but do to this, you're not going to want to tight lace this corset, it's definitely a fashion piece. It will do waist reduction of about 2"-3" without strain, but more than that could be questionable and risk breaking the zipper.

There are 6 pieces of flat, white steel bones - two along either side of the zipper, and two on either sides of the grommets. The grommets themselves are two part corset grommets, not the type that pull out easily. There are 8 pieces of spiral boning, also, one on each seam. The top and bottom are bound off in red bias (which all had to be hand-sewn down on the under side *whines*). The lacing up the back is corset lacing, which has a bit of stretch to it - this is one of the keys to comfortable fitting corsets, don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

---

Size Details: (these are not including the 2"-4" gap at the back for the lacing, these are the actual corset measurements)
- Bust: 33.5"
- Waist: 26"
- High Hip: 32" (this is roughly 3" below your natural waist)
- Length @ Center Front: 13" (the zipper itself is 12.5" long)
- Length @ Side: 11"
- Length @ Center Back: 13"

This is roughly a size 12

If you would like one custom made to fit you, I have quite a bit of the print left, and a whole bolt of the vinyl... go figure!

This may be for sale in my Etsy store, but I'm thinking of holding it for Geek.Kon to try to sell there before listing it. If you're interested in it, however, feel free to drop me a note about it!

I'm thinking about making a couple of these in various sizes to try to sell at conventions - what do you all think about that?

Sorry! That's one tutorial that would be a book to write, and if you can't sew, corsets are definitely something you shouldn't be jumping into (trust me, I did back in the day, and was so disappointed with how it turned out, I didn't want to sew anything else for a very long time) - but, there are some good bodice patterns out there (corsets without all the hard-core that makes them waist-shaping machines) that may not be too bad to follow Try flipping through a pattern book at a fabric store, or going online and seeing what Butterick, McCalls, or Simplicty has

I the zipper front - if you wanted to make it slightly tighter lacing you could always add a strap with a buckle closure at the waist. I love this as it is though.

Hehe, I hear you - this one doesn't fit me *sigh* I have enough fabric for custom making them - that's the next thing I'm hoping to get in my etsy store or on my site - how many I can custom make in whatever size, because I realize that everyone isn't the same size

SeductiveByatch In reply to taeliac [2008-07-31 00:52:02 +0000 UTC]

Well the good thing with corsets is that you don't have to have them totally tightly laced... so one size can really fit many people.

Nice!!! I love corsets!! How long does it take you to make them now? What pattern do you use (if any)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to ArionNaomi [2008-07-29 15:22:19 +0000 UTC]

I have too much of an obsession with them myself, lately ^___^

I was forced to get my time down, on one of these, to about 6 hours tops, by my professor. If I don't have to custom-cut the bones, I can do them in about 4-5 hours, now, which makes me so happy!

For these, I used the Laughing Moon pattern - [link] - but I've been developing a new method for drafting corsets directly off of customer measurements, which I'm going to be "beta testing" so to speak soon too It's worked for myself, some random family members and friends, I just need to keep testing and tweaking it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArionNaomi In reply to taeliac [2008-08-06 15:58:01 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty cool, it use to take me forever to work with the boning (and I used the nylon stuff). Where do you get your steel boning? The nylon stuff doesn't work for my body shape, it just curls up at my hips and waist.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to ArionNaomi [2008-08-06 17:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh! I hear you on that - I really don't like it for just that reason... if you're anything above a size 8 or so, it just doesn't hold up to you!

I buy most of mine from either CorsetMaking.com, RichardtheThread.com or DragonTownCorsetSupply.com, depending on what I need, and how much of whatever - I buy it by the yard from DragonTown, and by the piece from RichardtheThread, because he's a grand person to work with

ArionNaomi In reply to taeliac [2008-08-07 14:25:05 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! This helps so much. Some one I was talking to when I was associated with Florida Pirate Festival said that spring steel boning is better for holding bigger girls in. She also used to cap her boning off with some of that rubber sealer that you buy at like lowes and home depot to coat screwdriver handles. It keeps the rounded boning(she would round it off her self) from slicking through the fabric.

Thanks, you are an awsome source of help for my costuming!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to ArionNaomi [2008-08-07 17:19:18 +0000 UTC]

Indeed! I did a tutorial on tipping the spiral steel one's, but I tend not to dip my white bones, simply because the stuff takes forever to dry, and I can only find it in bright yellow, or black, and I'm always paranoid about the color seeping through; although, if you ever find it in white, lemme know where, please!

Yea, it is much more comfortable to wear - you'll just have to get the hang of where you need extra bones for support (like, myself, I need them in the front, but my friend, who is about my size, needs them more in the side to give her more of a figure) - you should really only be using the flat white bones in places where it's flat, like the center front and back, but I've had good success using is as "support" places, too, like along the side of the bust and whatnot It's just a lot of experimenting, but really is grand once you get one that fits right!

ArionNaomi In reply to taeliac [2008-08-08 14:10:11 +0000 UTC]

Awesom you've been a ton of help. I've only seen the rubber coating in yellow, but my friend used it under various colored fabrics and didn't get any bleed through. Still, what ever works best for each person. I'll look into those websites, they look cool. I'll do some poking and see what I can come up with.

Thanks!

Rock on.
You know, the pins in the body form could almost be like a mannequin's tattoo if you arranged them right. Just a stupid idea for your rocker corsets.

Thankies!

That is an awesome idea! I didn't even think of removing the pins, or doing anything with them, until way after taking the pictures (and then, I got too lazy to take new one's XP)
