Description Okay, so I will say this: I like this corset so much that I made one for myself. That has to say something, right? I'll get pix of me wearing it one of these days, but it's still a little tight, so here's hoping I'll be able to wear it shortly...

Okay, enough of that. Onto the corset.

This was an odd thing. I purchased a really old obi on a whim, just because I was having a bad day and binge-buying vintage stuffs from Japan seems to be a problem I need to deal with when feeling down. This obi, though, turned out to be a real steal (for me, at least) - the design was on both sides of the obi (for some reason, I was expecting the design to only be on the end of it, on the outside, kind of how you see a box tied obi falling in the back) and all along it - so even though part of it is damaged beyond hope, the rest of it is perfect fabric for me!!

I really liked the graphicness of the red, cream, black, and gold lamΓ©. The pattern is very relaxing to me, and the flowers are just a nice, added touch.

I knew exactly what I wanted to make with it. The success of the pattern draft for the points (the cream & black fleur-de-lis corset ) really made me very happy, because I thought the points were exactly what this design needed to compliment it.

So, it was a fairly standard corset to make, once I figured out where I wanted to cut the pattern in the front and all that good stuff.

The hardest part, though, was the black framing around the obi pieces. No one noticed them as being something other than the obi, which I suppose means I did a good job, but boy, were they a total pain in my ass to do. They're flat bias piping, but getting them to be perfectly even around the obi part was a complete pain, and involved much swearing and seam ripping at first...

All in all, though, I really love this design. I'm happy I went with cream silk (I had to go out and specially buy it to match the cream in the obi, because it is not in fact white, like I had expected *grumble* and I didn't have any cream doupioni on hand...) and not red or black, because it really is bright and chipper, but really... I dunno, elegant?

Anywho, I've rambled enough at you about this one. I have enough of this obi to make quite a few more of these, maybe four or five? So, if you're interested in one, and it's not your size, just send me an email or convo on Etsy (I'm notorious for not getting to go through dA notes very often, so it's usually a bad idea to just note me with something)

I hope you this one!

It's gorgeous! And pain though it might have been, that black was totally worth it. A very dramatic outline.

I think this is one of my favorites. It's very mod-looking to me. It reminds me of the bold and graphical designs of the 60s, but still classy.

It looks... WOW! I had never thought of cutting up an obi to make a corset before. And I like that you used a contrasting cream as it does bring out the design of the obi.

its a little tight? O.o
isn't that the point?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

taeliac In reply to kamenkewl [2010-08-18 23:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Not exactly - it's more than 9" smaller than my waist naturally, which is enough to be uncomfortable for wearing all day So, in a bit, it'll be more comfortable (hopefully)

`taeliac will probably come along and explain it alot better than I can, but I know a little about corsets so here's something for the meant time.

Although yes, they are tight, the idea is that they are tight enough to pull you in and 'sculpt' your figure in various points, rather than turn one bit into spilling mush because it's too tight and not 'controlled'.

You only want it a couple to a few inches (though some go further) than your waist, rather than crush you and creating an unflattering effect.

ah, good point~ don't wanna end up like the person with the 4 inch waist, organs all smushed and stuff

This is absolutely stunning! There's not a thing I don't like about it; the obi print is gorgeous, and I love the way you've laid out the print with the plain fabric and made the print stand out more (I've got a similar print/plain fabric layout somewhere for some jacquard that's waiting for a corset ).

I like the use of the black framing, too ; it matches the black lines in the obi pattern brilliantly and makes them "pop" more. It also has to be said: great stitching lines at the back! Lovely and neat!

The shape of the corset works so well. I honestly love this corset (I've said it enough times here to sound like a stuck record), I really could sit and look at it all day; it sounds odd, but it's almost soothing to look at it.

And that's the end of this rambling comment

Aaaah this is beautiful!! Speaking of Japanese fabrics, I have a bin of scrap fabrics, and some of it is brocades that are left over from various things I've made, and would probably make nice pieces/panels for corsets (they're not tiny scraps, but should be big enough to be of some use). Would you like me to take some photos of them for you? You're more than welcome to them if you want. They're not top quality, just simple ones from my local JoAnns, but they're very pretty. ^^
