Description Mirror. Hammer. Man.
Although the hammer has a logical place as the cause of the broken mirror, its physical position is totally non-logical. Even though it is the easiest solution to the problem of the broken mirror, it should not be there, in that place. The solution now causes an even greater conflict that can only be solved by believing in the impossible.

This is such a strange shot, but I like it lots. It's fun to think about

i like how you look first on the hammer.... and then you see the broken mirror, that's just great!

This is a really nice shot. Was the hammer put in there digitally? It doesn't seem to fit for some reason. I dunno.

I love the shot though!

Thanks. Nope, it was hanging by a string. As I mentioned in the description: the whole dilemma of the hammer belonging there or not is the point of the picture

I know the hammer belongs in the picture lol. But it just seemed like it was copied in there.

Glad to hear it wasn't.

The model's pose is great but the photo is way overexposured. The man is blending in with his own shadow which looks really strange and the lack of tones in the white background makes the whole composition look a little empty.
At first I thought of the hammer as just a symbol, not something that was physically a part of the actual environment. And that was a good thing because it gave the image a subcontext.
However, when I read the description it only felt over-pretentious. The position of the hammer isn't non-logical. It looks like a symbol rather than a floating hammer because of the exposure and the lack of background.
The image would be more surreal if you removed the description. It's a really nice concept.

Talescaper In reply to linecut [2007-02-26 19:19:37 +0000 UTC]

Well you are right on some points. First of all, I prefer the image to be completely void of a background, to keep the main attention to the subjects at hand, which is also why I overexposed it, removing anything that could distract from the matter at hand.
Secondly, you can still consider the hammer to be a mere symbol. I actually find it one of the better interpretations I have seen here. The description does not remove the possibility that the hammer is not physically there, after all, it's less logical to smash a mirror with the symbol of a hammer than a real hammer. I am glad you did not need the description to understand that. I added the lengthy description because people 'didn't get it', but I suppose since you were able to make your own hypothesis about it, I can understand why you would find the description to be... redundant. Thank you for the comment.

good concept, this one really inspires me, I'll think about it!

the quality is very good, of course, and the hammer on the left distracts the attention for a moment to give strength to the whole composition.

lol yeah, i can see that. things that were not meant to be apart of something often make it seem strnagley better and more creative, but sometimes things are left out and it loses what you had in mind the first place

a purely surreal masterpiece...Man Ray would be proud should he see this!! Youre highly impressive!! The surreal philosophy relies much on the incongrous positioning of unrelated, unorthodox objects...especially veristic surrealism, which is the representational branch of surrealism...you did a great job here...I salute you..

Thanks a lot. I especially appreciate the reference to Man Ray. Magritte's The Pleasure Principle is one of my favourite paintings and might have influenced me here. The painting is apparently based on a photograph by Man Ray.
I was wondering if I should put this in *the-surreal-arts gallery. You just convinced me.

Funny how the collective subconscious works. One of the inspirations for this photo was a quote from a filmmaker, who said 'Art is a hammer, not a mirror'. So the camera could be a hammer too. Very interesting.

Either way, the hammer was hanging from the ceiling on a piece of string.

Interesting how reading a description can alter the view of an image...beforehand, I didn't like the hammer there at all, it was too out of place and compositionally it really bothered me. What's it doing there, anyway? But after reading the description, it still seems compositionally out of place, but yet it makes more sense there, because we don't expect it to be there, and yet....what am I talking about? You totally have me rambling. Ha.
