Probably the last group I'll be trying out for in a long while here. I've always wanted to play an elder. So I thought I'd apply to oSaC.

Appearance || A once-lovely charcoal-gray she-cat with a mouse-brown tail and markings below her eyes. Her muzzle is silvered with age, and she has clouded blue, blind eyes. She has long fur and a wiry frame, weathered with age. The feather of an albatross is woven into the long fur of her left cheek.

Wise | It is not only old age that brings wisdom to Sleetgaze's tongue. It is her belief that her blindness has allowed her to focus more on her mind, as opposed to what her eyes would have misled her to think. And indeed, Sleetgaze is regarded as a very astute feline, despite her disability that has been a part of her since her warrior days. She is sought for advice and opinion on many a topic.
Pious | It would be an understatement to say that Sleetgaze holds faith in StarClan. She is very strict in her belief, and finds anything said against the ancestors to be a very sinful thing indeed. Her grandmother told her stories of the days when StarClan walked the skies, and though she never lived under them as such, she regards them as of the highest and most respected spirits.
Wry || Despite being a good-natured cat at heart, Sleetgaze tends to have a very wry sense of humor. She does not mind wise cracks at her blindness, and will more than likely join in with her own dry, mocking sense of humor.
Tactical || A quality sprung from her idle days as a blind warrior, Sleetgaze is known to be a very strategic cat. She can give you a solution to a wide array of problems, and is often consulted for advice on anything from battle plans to preserving prey. This has earned her much respect within the Clan.

History ||
Sleetkit was born as the single daughter of Mumblebreeze and Cliffcrash. Her name was given in honor of the sleeting rain that poured upon the day of her birth. There was not much to her kithood, besides the fact that she was born a moon earlier than she ought to have been. The medicine cat was concerned, but as far as he could tell, Sleetkit would be fine. Unbeknownst to both her parents and the healing cat, Sleetkit had been born with something that would be untreatable.

The early signs of her condition showed up in her apprentice years. As a 'paw, she had horrible depth perception, and did not do well in hunting. She was always bumping into things, which caused her to receive much grief from her fellow apprentices and even her parents. They chastised her for not paying attention to her mentor, attributing her constant failure to laziness and a wandering mind. She often tried to explain that she honestly couldn't see well, and that everything seemed dim and cloudy, but her father dismissed these reasons as excuses. Cliffcrash was disappointed, and often tried to convince his mate to have a second litter - perhaps they would have kits that showed more initiative and diligence than Sleetpaw did. For a while, Mumblebreeze was on his side, and the pair did end up having a second litter. However, two of the three kits perished soon after their birth, which Mumblebreeze took as a sign that perhaps Sleetpaw deserved more love than they gave her. Nursing the surviving she-kit, Mumblebreeze began to reach out to both Sleetpaw and the medicine cat, concerned now that Sleetpaw's claims of poor vision held truth. The tom could find nothing visibly wrong, however, aside from that Sleetpaw's pupils seemed to be continually dilated, and increasingly clouded from their black pigments. He began to make regular check-ups on the gray she-cat, checking her eyes every moon to study the change. Feeling as if she was being treated more as a test subject than a Clanmate, she grew to be moody and withdrawn from the few friends she had made. Her father, refusing to acknowledge that there may be something wrong, became a very distant - if not nonexistent - part of her life.

At first, Sleetpaw was distraught at this proclamation. She couldn't be blind! She wasn't old! This wasn't fair. She would be looked down upon by everyone now, and if it was really true - if she was really going blind - how was she to be a proper warrior? That had been her dream since kithood! And now it was to be crushed, by some stupid diagnosis. The burden of this conclusion weighted her down for many sunrises, and she often felt it pressing down upon her within the pitying gazes of the Clan. Even her mentor seemed to become wary in training, as if she had become a delicate sliver of wood, liable to snap into splinters.

Sitting upon the beaches of the ocean one dawn, Sleetpaw made a resolution to herself. She would work harder than ever, and pass her assessments in time to become a warrior with her fellow apprentices. Her failing sight would be something she would just have to live with.

True to her decision, Sleetpaw was made a warrior at the appointed time. She wasn't even disheartened by the name given by the leader: Sleetgaze. "Though your sight may be shrouded, your spirit and fortitude are clear to all of TidalClan." The confidence from the leader seemed to spread to the rest of the Clan, and even to herself. A few moons into her warriorship, Sleetgaze found that her vision worsened, but it no longer dismayed her. She would face this obstacle, whether it be with sighted or blinded eyes. As the last rays of light dimmed in her eyes and the world around became simply of scent, sound, and touch, she was edged into the elders' den at a still-young age, and Sleetgaze accepted it with little protest. She would not be able to fish in the ocean any longer, and knew that this was where she was to be for the rest of her days. Wishing to find something useful to do, she began to design strategies, tactics, and plans for everything from battles to floods. Everything was clear in her head - in fact, with the blackness around her, it was easy to concentrate on her thoughts. She showed these plans by arranging pebbles and claw-scratches, slowly feeling with her paws and learning quickly to measure distances by ear and touch. She became a respected consultant in times that strategy was needed. Her sister Dewbounce, grown into a strong warrior by this time, described with zeal the everyday comings and goings that Sleetgaze missed. They would lay side-by-side for hours, Dewbounce relating everything from the appearance of new kits to the colors of each sunset, and Sleetgaze held no envy nor resentment towards her sister. The two sisters developed an inseparable bond, only broken by the untimely death of Dewbounce in an accident of which the cause was never explained. Cliffcrash and Mumblebreeze both died of natural causes, but never joined Sleetgaze in the elders' den.

Sleetgaze has grown old with the seasons, and is now of a proper elder's age. She is still respected within the Clan, and tells stories passed down of the days that her grandmother lived under a StarClan that walked the skies. Her spiritual belief in her ancestors is strong, and she trusts that she will one day join their starry ranks. She has three living blood relations - Dewbounce's daughter, Floeshine, as well as Floeshine's two kits, Willowtail and Soakedcurl.

PRD is a disorder in which a cat's vision slowly deteriorates, and over time causes complete blindness in both eyes. Often the full blindness can appear very sudden, even though it has been developing for many months.

A frosty ocean breeze whistled through the rocky Beach Cave, buffeting the fur of a wiry-framed she-cat who stood with her face turned to the sound of the water. The chill didn't bother her much, even though it appeared the frail feline was liable to be taken with the salty air like the husk of some delicate plant. Any TidalClan cat could see, however, that the elder cat was fixed firmly in place, as this was her home, and she had long since learned how to weather the boisterous winds. A single feather fluttered madly, woven tightly into the long fur of her cheeks. The warmth of hazy sunlight streamed through the ocean mists, touching her aged features and sightless eyes with as much of a gentle touch of a mother to her newborn kits. "Dewbounce," she murmured to a spirit now passed on, "I wish you were here to tell me what the ocean looks like today... I wager it is beautiful in the morning light." Her voice was wistful and cracked with age, barely audible as it was swept away with the wind.

Fennel smiled. "For an old friend? Two schillings for three rolls," she replied, noting his nervousness. "And if that's too much for you, I might be able to spare you one for free." Leaning her cheek on her paw, the tabby feline studied him carefully, hoping he would stay for some conversation. She hadn't seen him in such a long while - and one didn't often come across old memories that weren't in some way stained with loss or sorrow. Her few seasons in school had been nice ones; it was, after all, the place she had learned the alphabet. Her mother had taught her how to string the letters together to spin webs of words, and now her skills of poetry were among her most valued - but secret - talents. Realizing that she was rambling in her own thoughts, the creamy she-cat smiled again. "You can always stay for tea, too," she added, tail sweeping through the four-dusted air.
