Description EDiT : Also, make sure to check out :artist: , an updated, thiefless version of this emoticon!

Nobody likes an art-thief...but this little guy's just too cute not to love.
i think most every artist has stolen at least one piece of art. if not a trace, then at least heavy inspiration. Whether recent or back in the stick-figure phase, everybody's done it somewhere along the line.

EDiT : i've also fixed the 'flash' of white in several (3) frames. i guess i forgot to make them transperant when i added them to the animation late. However, because of DA's popular glitches, the image may still 'flash'. if it does, just refresh and the newest revision should load.

...and yes, i realize there's about 8 pixels of res never used. if somebody can fix this for me, please let me know. i'm too lazy to re-size and re-compose the whole animation.

gif apparently good look at it as it is the way you do your own work of art and someone else steals it by becoming their own...

This is how I feel about art thieves. They see your work, appreciate it, then next thing you know, they smack upside the head with it and pass it off as their own. This is funny as well, despite it being old.

At some point most children will steal a drawing. I copied a drawing line-for-line out of a magazine when I was ten. But now I'm all grown up and kids are stealing my drawings. The great circle of... thievery or something. Most kids grow out of it. Its the adults who steal your work and then SELL it that I hate.

At some point, most kids will steal something, whether it's intellectual property or material goods. Still ain't cute. :/

Its not worth getting up set about, unless its your kid. Some artists spend way too much tie worrying about it when they could just be making better art.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. One view point maybe that art is intended to inspire. If you take a photo of mountains and call it Art are you stealing? Many people get high and mighty about the theft of Ideas my question for you is.....who hurt you?

STORY TIME:
I understand that a lot of people used tracing/heavy inspiration from other artists to figure out how to draw, then later on make up their own style... But using it, claiming it as theirs original, and showing it off to other people is just plainly ridiculous.

I traced Sonic The Hedgehog pictures to figure out how to draw, but drawing them never lasted longer than a year, and looked at Jhonen V.'s comics to figure out different angles/movements/emotions, it helped me get a type of art style of today that expresses me.
That is not art theft. It's pretty much learning.

JustForLulz28 In reply to Vinfuric [2011-12-15 07:06:03 +0000 UTC]

Been there, done that. I think most kids do. If nothing else it helps with pencil coordination. But I have to disagree, its way way easier to develop a distinctive style if you started with life drawing. After finishing art 101 in college I completely re-worked the style of my cartoons, and it looks way better. Copying a style without knowing its roots in reality, or its roots period, just means your putting style on top of style.

Like when s teacher photocopies a homework sheet too many times and can no longer read the math problems (bad example?).

My favorite example is the kids who think their drawing anime and being unique about it, and scorn Disney animation XD

if you say use a photo and drew over it and still gave created to the real owner, is that art theft?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JustForLulz28 In reply to GalacticRainbow [2011-12-15 07:10:23 +0000 UTC]

Did the owner give you permission first?

I don't know how many time I or my friends have found our work turned into 'bases' that link to a photo-bucket picture of our work... without our names. And we have no way to contact the 'artist' who traced our work besides straight up reporting them. Ironically its always a really bad drawing too.

You'll always be stuck not being able to come up with your own poses, or figuring out the anatomy for different body types if you have to trace to do it. Life drawing and figure drawing wok way better. Also, always thumbnail out a pose before you look for a reference picture, then you can honestly say it was your own idea, and all the photo did was help. You'll genraly need two or three photos to get it just right.

i never stole from anybody else's work and i hate it when people use that as an excuse. heavy inspiration is not the same as being inspired by somebody's work. being inspired is creating a similar mood or concept or colour because you saw something new and you liked it and decided to venture in that way for a little. but it's not what the thieves do, blatantly take the same concept or take part of the finished work add some subpar details and pass it off as your own. never.

Congratulations on the Daily Deviation!

I don't notice any flashes of white, so I think the problem was fixed.

Stealing someone's art like that is like slapping them in the face with their own work. But you have a point... I think everyone's at least taken some inspiration from another person's art at some point. I know I'm inspired by art I see... and I do my own interpretations of really cute things... =/

But I never trace. Still... You have a point.

Excellent work on the animation! It looks like it took a lot of time and effort. But it was clearly worth it. XD Wonderful job!

The flashing thing was actually a goof on my part. i accidentally left in a blank frame of all white. i fixed it a loooooong time ago but dA kept bringing up the old image file for a while.

Thanks, also, for the kind words.

It would have been talking about how some people are just so picky when you draw portraits of them, like its plastic surgery.
