Description 27-Frame Loop
30 frames per second
for:

Another commission of the OC, Rymz . This time he's flying.

I drew the background in this loop completely by hand, even those speedlines in the air.

It was my first time tackling a moving shot with this particular perspective, so I decided to skip using 3D planes in After Effects and just do it the old-fashioned way.

It's not easy to make a short loop like this work. Hope you enjoy it.

Also, I wouldn't mind taking on more commissions like this. Just need to post a journal saying that I'm officially open now.

Speaking of which...here it is!

Commissions OPEN: 5 $20 cel slots, 1 animated loop

Yo! Just wanted to follow up on what I said yesterday about opening up for commissions.

I'm doing two rounds of film cel commissions, 5 slots each. This is round one. Here's what you get:

Any single character of your choosing in a widescreen film shot, chest or waist-up

Optional captions

Simple background and color included, of course

The original Photoshop file and a hi-res JPG in 1920x1080

Password-protected, online backup of your file in case you lose it

Preliminary sketch and two revisions

No payment necessary until I send the final preview image

If you'd like a slot then note me with the following:

Visua

How it was made...

Made in Photoshop CS5 Extended
&
After Effects CS5 Pro

Yep. Everything in my gallery is all hand drawn.

This one kicked my tail a bit, but it worked out.

Hiya! I love this work. The speedlines and intense expression are awesome, and I love the billowy hoodie. I have a question though: recently I decided to do an animation/animated movie for a friend, and there's a panel in which the main character is flying. May I use this animation/gif if I give you credit? Please note this is an ameteur video and there will be absolutely no commercial use of it or any selling/distributing for money of any kind. Just a fun project to a cool song. Note or comment please? Thanks so much!

I looked at DA 777, and I prefer this piece. The background shows me more movement, though there is little you can do to show movement for someone clearly falling from high in the sky unless you make certain compromises to realism.

My only critique is that the faces in both are stone-cold solid with no signs of being affected physically by their movement. In this piece it's more apparent - the character is moving so fast that everything is a blur, yet they don't blink, and not a single hair falls out of place. That could just as easily be a stylistic choice that I'm missing, or it could be a compromise for time. I took a peek at your profile, and your workcam image shows me that you clearly know what you're doing.

Nice work!

Thanks for really looking at the two pieces and sharing your thoughts.

Yes, the nature of both being very short loops with certain file size restrictions meant that I didn't have enough frames to put some extra emotion in the character's faces. dA 777 is only 15 frames long, so there's no room to change expression.

Though I was given note by the client who commissioned this loop that the character doesn't blink when he's using his abilities, so it works out in this particular case.

Thanks again for taking the time to critique. Animation has its quirks and it's always fun to figure out how to get around them.

Thanks - I figured I was missing certain some things. File size, image dimensions, and colour depth each figure into the final product.

You do good work.

One question, what file do you use to export your animations?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thatLD In reply to Arne-PWNS-You [2012-01-18 20:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! It depends on where the file will be going.

For dA, I save the animations as FLVs from After Effects then convert them to SWFs in Flash.

Arne-PWNS-You In reply to thatLD [2012-01-19 06:52:42 +0000 UTC]

But I make my animations in flash, what category on dA should I submit my submission in?

thatLD In reply to Arne-PWNS-You [2012-01-19 18:23:24 +0000 UTC]

The same category that this deviation is in.

Flash -> Animations

this is sooo freakin cool. what kinda file is this? animated gif? i just always have rendering issues and anytime i try this is comes out all grainy. any thoughts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thatLD In reply to KIRKparrish [2011-11-02 20:17:18 +0000 UTC]

It's an FLV file that I rendered from After Effects and dropped into a SWF.

GIFs can only handle 256 colors throughout all the frames in the file. There are more colors in your work than the GIF knows what to do with so it dithers the difference and creates a grainy look.

A file like this might be able to pass as a GIF because there aren't that many different colors.

Just test out saving a cel-shaded drawing as a GIF versus an all-out painted one to see the difference.
