Description This is just a little work I did a couple of weeks ago. It's a pair of ladybugs on coffee-stained paper with the "friend" kanji. It's about 4" by 6", matted to 8" by 10". I try to keep my matting a standard size so the buyers won't have to get my work customed framed if they don't care to.
Until a couple of weeks ago, the thought never crossed my mind to paint my insects on coffee-stain, but I kind of like the way they look. I think I'll probably change that outer mat to red or brown, now that I look at it.

Thanks! The ladybugs were kind of how I got my start. I just liked painting them, and when I did outdoor festivals back in the early days, I had a tent full of ladybug paintings. They're pretty popular.

Thanks! I've done so many ladybug paintings that I could just about do them in my sleep. I think the shadows are what gives that effect.

I’ve always liked ladybugs – they symbolize luck and love (which fits in so well with your friends theme), and they’re just so darned cute! I love your version of them, including their coffee-stained background!

Thanks very much! I got my start with ladybugs - I remember doing outdoor shows with a tent just full of ladybug paintings.

I usually use Japanese, but there are several useful kanjis that are the same in Japanese as in Chinese, like this one and "Peace".

before i read the description i was thinking that i liked the green matt... red or brown would also be lovely of course however, the lighter green works nicely in a very neutral way where as the black was very striking

theancientofdays In reply to stuwaha [2008-02-08 07:53:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! I use that light green mat a good bit because it goes well with a lot of the Asian work I do, but my real staple for matboard is black - I ought to just buy a whole box of it so I won't run out.

theancientofdays In reply to OdderByArt [2008-01-31 11:56:43 +0000 UTC]

This time it's not the blades's fault - that particular brand of mat has an unfortunate tendency to get ragged. I usually take a kneaded eraser and rub off the bits, but I guess I forgot on this one. Gee, pretty observant of you! After I took the snap, I thought, "I hope people don't think all my mats look like this."

Sorry... Its my classical training. 4 years of being the only picture framer and Designer in a gallery will beat the details and the critical eye to mattes into you mercilessly... Its hard to escape (even after another 4 years...)

Oh, yes - the paper's very real. I think the 3D effect is from the shadows - I've painted so many of these little guys that painting the shadows in the right places is kind of second nature now.
