Description "Venus in Chaps" is one of my personal favourites - it's based, obviously, on Botticelli's "Birth of Venus". It's oil, 12" by 24" and sadly, still remains available. This one took a great deal of time because I wanted to get as close to the original as I could, and Botticelli's is huge, so I had to cram a lot of little tiny details into rather a small space. I get a real kick out of doing these parodies. They sell poorly, but they do tend to attract a lot of attention.
I'm an avid motorcyclist (but I'm also a safe rider), and chaps and leather are a pretty big part of a serious rider's equipment. If you happen to be interested, I ride an '82 Silverwing tourer that I restored. It's bright purple.

EDIT: Original no longer available.

I'm so glad you like her! I'm glad the real thing hangs in your house - I couldn't have asked for a better home for her!

I had a dream about you and that painting; I actually dreamt that I had painted it for you in the first place. I thought that was appropriate - it just wouldn't be right if anyone else had it. It's where it belongs.

Thanks very much! I'm awfully proud of that one, if for no other reason than it was an exercise in patience! She's a little more modest this way, and quite a hit with motorcyclists. XD

Nice. I was going to make some joke about Boot-icelli but nothing came to me, sorry. I really like this take on my favourite painting, good job.

Thank you very much! I figured when I got my motorcycle leather that some famous painting ought to be parodied along those lines. Botticelli's being naked, I thought this way she's perhaps a bit more "modest". "Boot-icelli"

Thanks very much! I'm so glad you noticed the details - when I paint a parody, I try to really get as close as I can to the original. I think it adds to the humour.

I always liked this one, and I'm so glad you put it back up. I find your parodies quite hilarious! Of course, they are also very well done as well.

I've always thought about trying a parody of one of the classics, but my classical personality would just come out and it'd just end up looking very classical. I've never been good at doing things with humor. It's that perfectionist in me.

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-01-31 21:37:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! This has always been one of my favourites. I think it's just that so many of the art people I run into are dry and deadly serious all the time, so it's nice to try to shake it up a bit.
Don't knock being a perfectionist - it's obviously served you quite well!

I understand it has something to do with being "artists". I really wasn't trying to hurt your feelings...

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-02-04 00:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh goodness, Chris! I was TEASING! Having fun. I wasn't upset at all! In fact, I was laughing! It's very true, you know. Artists are a bit on the "strange" side, at least in some areas.......when it comes to me, it's actually ENJOYING noodling on one square inch of paper in an hour.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-02-04 14:38:45 +0000 UTC]

It only takes you an hour to do a square inch!?!?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aprilart In reply to theancientofdays [2007-02-05 12:54:21 +0000 UTC]

LOL! Indeed, that is how long it takes me, usually. It depends on what it is I'm drawing, but for the most part - yes - it takes me about an hour to get one square inch done. That's why it takes me so long to get one piece finished. Crazy, no?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

theancientofdays In reply to Aprilart [2007-02-05 15:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Not crazy at all! One of my friends is a pen & ink artist in California (Celeste Rehm), and she does work that takes about that long. Of course, most of her work is filthy! There's nothing crazy about it, particularly if you can create the kind of work you do. Most people couldn't, regardless of how long they took....

This is excellent - you painted every part very well. Especially the tones on the clothes that reflect the shadow position and the shape.

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the kind words on the leather - that was really the only part of the painting I had to dig out of my imagination.

I've checked out the one you placed in your scraps, but I'll have to look again on the gallery's computer - my monitor at home is so awful, I couldn't get a decent peek.

I have a soft spot for meaningful parodies. I love this one. It reminds me of a parody I did of Jamie Wyeth's Draft Age, Instead of a man in a leather jacket I used a beautiful woman in vinyl XD

Thanks very much, and thanks for the ! I think the best leather I've got is a duster - it reaches down to my shins, and has leg holders. A terribly cool item, but I'm always afraid it's going to get caught inthe wheels!

So we don't get to see it? D:

My dad had a big box of my artwork from kindergarten and elementary school that he saved for thirty years. Then he just threw it away. I was terribly upset - I could have posted a bazillion deviations. XD
