History
It is speculated that the subject “Gojira” originated from, or was mutated by, the 1954 ██████ █████ tests in the Marshall Islands. On 14-10-1954, “Gojira” surfaced off the coast of Shinagawa, and began an immediate and brutal assault on the city. Shortly thereafter, it disappears without warning beneath the waves. The city is put on high alert, and an electrical barrier known as バリアセブン (Barrier Seven) is erected. Shortly after the initial attack, on 01/11/1954, “Gojira” resurfaces, obliterating Barrier Seven in its entirety. Unleashing a blast of its atomic breath, the creature razes what remains of Tokyo, until the physicist ███████ ████████ personally employed a weapon known as the Oxygen Destroyer. “Gojira” was presumed dead following activation.
In 1984, a Soviet ███████ ███ ███ nuclear submarine disappears. A diplomatic schism between Soviet Russia and the United States follows shortly thereafter, nearly leading to a rapid escalation of the Cold War. With the abrupt return of “Gojira” to the Japanese coast, though, the conflict came to a sudden end. The American, Japanese and Soviet governments collaborate to conceive a plan to stop the attacks; the American suggestion of a nuclear warhead is immediately vetoed. In the end, the aircraft S-R-X “Super-X” is instead deployed, to great effect, and “Gojira” is driven into the ocean using high-pitched frequencies.
The following decades see various re-emergences of “Gojira”, beginning in the year 1999 and its confrontation with the extra-terrestrial organism dubbed “Orga”. At least fifteen such encounters take place in eight major cities: the most notable and destructive is "K-DAY", an event beginning on 14-09-2013 which results in 8.7 million deaths. The 2022 confrontation with ██████████ later results in the radiological contamination of Geneva, Switzerland.
Biology
Subject “Gojira” is a large and heavily scarred hyperfaunal organism, among the largest thus identified (see Mass, Height and Length sections). General morphology reflects no identified tetrapod clade, though some more subtle aspects of its morphology are indicative of a phylogenetic position deep within Therapsida (see Addendum I). The subject possesses an array of enlarged, bone-white dorsal structures; the exact nature of these structures is wholly unclear, though their link to the subject's radiotrophic nature is without question. As a result of its extensive mutations, large patches of “Gojira’s” skin frequently slough off, only to be replaced with new tissue growth within roughly 30 minutes. This process appears to cause the subject mild physical discomfort, though reports from the 1954 atrocity contradict this, with one outright stating that “the creature [could] feel no pain”. It is possible that “Gojira” suffered significant nerve damage from the Castle Bravo bombing, which has only been repaired in recent years.
The interior structure of “Gojira”, too, is unorthodox among tetrapods. Heavy physical deformities are present: entirely novel organs, most without any real purpose, manifest within the body cavity. The alimentary canal of “Gojira” has been modified into a biological equivalent of a nuclear reactor, metabolizing background radiation and outputting enormous amounts of energy, forming ionized plasma. This energy is funnelled through modified blood vessels into the towering, asymmetric dorsal structures on the subject’s back. When necessary, an electromagnetic charge is emitted, ejecting plasma from the subject’s mouth like a railgun. The resultant “atomic breath” is capable of causing significant damage to structures and other hyperfauna, and when “supercharged”, is capable of travelling for distances of up to ███ km (see Addendum II). In addition, “Gojira” is capable of channelling radiation into its tail. This allows for its use as a sort of superheated whip, capable of causing extreme damage to structures and other hyperfauna.
Radiation levels emitted by “Gojira” are extremely high, with the creature emitting ionizing gamma rays at a consistent rate of 50,000 millisieverts (mSv). Strangely, exposure to the subject’s radiation has been known to cause atypical symptoms when compared with more "typical" radiation poisoning:
· Initial symptoms resemble a rapidly accelerated form of conventional radiation poisoning; nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are common in this stage.
· Within hours of exposure, widespread lesions and skin burns manifest; hair loss and disruption to the immune system follow at this stage, resulting in an increased risk of infection from whatever micro-organisms can survive such high amounts of radiation.
· The breakdown of internal tissues begins almost universally in the fourth hour. Organs assume a viscous state and begin to fuse. The cardiovascular system begins to break down.
· Within six hours, all internal tissues have coagulated into an unrecognizable “soup” with the consistency of cream cheese. Death occurs in all cases.
The exact mechanisms by which these symptoms manifest are currently poorly understood. Controlled studies have shown that exposure to a gamma radiation dosage with an equivalent number of mSv leads only to expected symptoms for acute radiation sickness (ARS). Some have speculated that “Gojira” is capable of emitting an entirely novel form of radiation with the aforementioned adverse effects, one capable of “skipping” the typical latent stage. Such radiation ionizes molecules, resulting in the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Extensive tissue damage follows. Data shows that the intensity of “Gojira’s” radiation increases significantly during moments of heightened activity, such as when the subject is engaged in combat or suffering severe physical damage; it has been speculated that “Gojira” is capable of redirecting high quantities of radiation from its dorsal spines to damaged or otherwise disabled appendages.
“Gojira” is amongst the most intelligent of hyperfauna, having an extremely complex neural network converging on certain non-human primates. A degree of metacognition has also been observed. Though naturally exhibiting extreme impulsivity, “Gojira” is capable of problem solving and even complex planning, to the extent of co-operating with other hyperfauna (and, on occasion, humans) to achieve a certain goal. The parts of “Gojira’s” brain dedicated to senses are as expected among non-mammal cynodonts (see Addendum I), with reduced olfactory capabilities.
Threat mitigation
As demonstrated by the 1954 tragedy, “Gojira” poses an inherent and significant threat to global infrastructure; as of 31-05-2023, he is one of three Category IV hyperfauna to pose an existential risk towards humanity, and has been historically classed as a “Destroyer”. Though in recent years its levels of aggression have significantly decreased, in the eventuality that it should again turn against mankind, there exist many protocols in place designed to mitigate the threat. (See Protocol File 18, Section C) The most significant of these is Anti-Hyperfauna Protocol 87-B “Fimbulwinter”, devised by a joint-United Nations–SIRAF coalition on 05-11-2015. A multifaceted and highly destructive plan of attack, Protocol 87-B “Fimbulwinter” is to be deployed against any threat deemed sufficient. Fimbulwinter would consist of an aerial assault by at least fifteen ███ ████████, each equipped with three specialized █████████ ███████ ███████; this “carpet-bombing” would likely destroy the organism entirely, at the cost of devastating a localized area and possibly leading to ██████ ███████ effects.
Addendum I: Taxonomy
That “Gojira” is a tetrapod is without question. However, over the years, there has been much debate over which tetrapod clade it belongs to. Extensive genetic tests performed on shed tissue samples are inconclusive, given the number of genomic anomalies present. Morphology alone, though, suggests that “Gojira” is an aberrant non-mammalian therapsid, most likely related to the late Permian cynodont Procynosuchus delaharpeae. Though few external attributes exist to corroborate this hypothesis, the presence of external ears and various tooth morphologies are among them. Scans of “Gojira’s” skeletal anatomy performed on 31-05-2023, during a state of temporary dormancy, reveal internal characteristics such as a secondary palate and a mammalian braincase, further supporting the cynodont hypothesis of “Gojira’s” origins.
Addendum II: Incident Report 25-B
On 31-10-2022, the hijacking of the Large Hadron Collider by ███ █████ ██ ███ █████████ resulted in a spatiotemporal rift being opened. A red cloud escaped from the rift, and more than two thousand (2,000) locals were afflicted by an unknown illness. Within three weeks, following rapid evolution, a novel hyperfaunal organism (codenamed “██████████”) emerged. During the confrontation between “██████████” and “Gojira”, the latter employed a “supercharged” variant of its typical atomic breath. Reports of a “strange, orange ray of light” came from as far away as the Space Station J-33, in orbit ~253.5 miles (408 km) from the Earth at the time.
