This photograph was taken by a Mr. Bert Moynihan, an individual who alleged in 1899 to have constructed a functional camera called a "Fonotype" and who is considered by most certain scholars to be the forerunner of Kodak. Ostensibly taken in 1902, Moynihan alleged that the image depicted an unknown predatory reptile, which he claimed to have brought through a time machine he dubbed a "temporal tractator"; he stated that it fell ill and passed due to "consumption" (= tuberculosis). The photograph is the only known image of the creature, and is the only surviving photograph taken using the Fonotype.

Subsequent analyses have shown the animal to closely resemble Tyrannosaurus rex, which would not be described until three years later.
