The final (completed) Ray Dunn strip.

In addition to setting up what would've been the first real arc of the series, we also snuck in a peek into the sadness Ray hides beneath his bravado. Underneath all the pulp sci-fi action, Ray Dunn was meant to be a character character study. Specifically of how heroes like Flash Gordon and especially Buck Rogers are catapulted into worlds of adventure while leaving everything and everyone they've ever known behind; Futurama used this to both comedic and heartbreaking effect in with the character of Fry, but I wanted to really explore this idea. I'll explain more in next week's post.

And for those of you wondering, yes it was the Black Hole Bandits who added the tracker to the package; not quite as dumb as Ray thought! As for our muguffin, the plan was for it to be a weapon to be used in the midst of a planetary civil war, with Ray and friends getting caught up in all the crossfire.
