Looks almost like Asmus "Mouse" Gunderson, the little Dutch pirate from a novel I'm working on. This lad just has a bit more meat on his bones.

Awesome! Love the rich lighting of the whole scene... also, the pirate seems to have an appropiate length for people from that time, which is quite unique in modern art

Mr. zJoriz,
In those times, people were smaller?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

zJoriz In reply to DharienNigthroad [2010-06-07 07:27:05 +0000 UTC]

As far as I know, yes. An aunt of mine lives in a house which was built, I think, some time around 1800. The door posts are really low. I think the average length of people back then was 5 ft or so.

On the other hand, looking at this pic again makes me suspect the artist wanted to add vertical perspective and put in too much for the pirate to fit the background properly... The perspective on the boat is pretty weird as well 0.o

I find it quite intriguing how you could make that pirate look old and young at the same time. And his dwarvish height also makes it more...whats the word? ...Mind-boggling. Its like he's a young child who has been swept up in the adventure of the seas that left him old with experience. And his slight smirk is so charming!! *faints from awesumness*

Even his parrot looks quite young! And so cute. I love how you designed his costume too. Its a typical garment designed for all pirates but I love how it fits with his stance. Beautiful colors too. They give a light-hearted sort of feel. Shall I say this deviation deserve a ? Absolutely! ;D

Really enjoyed looking at this. You have a nice colour choice, and the way the blue creeps in from the back and left is nicely atmospheric, but my favourite part is that striking flash of green on the Parrot, and the way it occupies the space of the sail - excellent

Man, I freakin' love how you handle the colors in these nautical scenes. The way you paint those creamy whites (with hints of bright orange and cyan) is so old skool, in a GOOD way.
