Description Tutorial of how I make my lines so smooth in Photoshop CS5.

I am not sure if this works in any other versions of Photoshop, but there is probably a similar process.

Whenever I try to select my lines, it just keeps selecting the whole area, then saying "No pixels were selected" when I try to do Inverse Selection. Am I doing something wrong?

when i right click the path, the option to fill it has been grayed out and cant be selected. o_0

Edit-
ok i have no idea how i made it work. random clicking back and forth between the tabs suddenly brought it to life, but it filled in whole chunks of picture that were not part of the lineart lol

aaah technology hates me!

if you have illustrator because you have the suite or adobe online, you can tell it to live trace and then expand. very similar process, but you have a control box to adjust for different results. You can then move the whole thing over into photoshop.

Hi there. This tutorial worked for me once, but now the lines won't fill. I re-followed this to the T, but the path lines just won't fill. Do you have any idea why this might be?

I have a problem. i work with Ps CS6 and after i did all of this the lines are not smooth and they have some kind of grey outline that makes it look horrible. i selected black colour but it doesnt work. please help

Tuulihaukka In reply to Mimiycha [2015-09-18 16:17:40 +0000 UTC]

This is an older post but in case you still have the same problem, you need to delete the work path once it is filled. So you create your work path from selection, then right-click and fill work path. After that you drag your work path to the bin, and it will leave only the outlines Hopefully this helps.

Do you know how I could do this in photoshop elements 8? There is no "paths" tab (that I can find)

Sorry for the late reply!
I'm not entirely sure that there are paths included in Photoshop Elements, or at least this feature of the paths tool.
I suggest looking online for any helpful tips!

Interesting. I know GIMP has something similar to this, but not sure whether or not it will do exactly the same thing. I will have to mess around and see what happens.Β

Alright, after some experimentation, I've discovered that it's pretty much the same thing up until the part where you are converting the selection to a path. You go to the Paths tab like in this tutorial, and then.....

1. Look for the button that says Selection to Path (in roughly the same area as shown in this tutorial), and hold SHIFT while clicking that button.Β

2. This opens a window with a bajillion slider bars. The value you want to edit is named Error Threshold; set it to 2-4 pixels like in this tutorial. Click OK.Β

3. Now you have a path named Selection. Unfortunately, GIMP will not let you fill a path directly, so you have to turn this path back into a selection. Still in the Paths tab, click the button called Path to Selection.Β

4. Choose the bucket fill tool. Under Tool Options for the bucket fill, you may want to have Fill whole selection checked, just to make lining several disconnected objects easier. (Tool Options is most likely docked under the Toolbox; if not, go to Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Tool Options)

5. Fill the selection with black.Β

6. Turn off your selections/paths/whatever and tada!

hey, tried you method, since i cant get it to work in PS, the only issue is, since it was drawn in PS, the lines are anti aliased, but selecting the RGB (even with transparency) does not include the AA bits, do you have any fixes?

live trace appears on the upper bar when you have some art selected, fyi.

This is actually really cool! I'll have to give it a go. I hate doing lineart because of how hard it is to get it to look neat, so I'll give it a try next time I draw something with thicker lines. :>

I'd love to see it!
I find that if you make your picture pretty big with fairly thick lines it works best, so don't be afraid to use the entire page!
