Description The Universe is both incomprehensibly vast and incomprehensibly ancient. Sentient life has existed long before Earth, and far away from it. And among the countless planets and star systems, chaos, crime and injustice is still a constant. There has always been individuals who have fought to keep order, but who kept order over them?

Enter the Guardians of the Universe. Among the first sapient lifeforms, they saw how unruly the universe was and decided to do something about it. After a few (Rather shameful) attempts, they reached a satisfying solution: To harness the primal power of will, and literally turn it into a light to shine through the darkest nights. They placed this light in a Central Battery on the very center of the universe, the planet Oa, which would serve as their new base of operations. Thus it was birthed the Green Lantern Corps.

For aeons, the Corps would gather recruits from all over the universe, judging them worthy by their capacity to overcome fear as well as their willpower. Once deemed worthy, they would receive a Green Power Ring capable of wielding the Green Light of Willpower, which would allow its members to fly, survive without need of air or other nutrition, and mainly, being able to create solid constructs made out of pure light, only limited by the user's imagination. All of this with the one condition that it needed to be charged on a personal, miniaturized Battery.

A vast organisation was formed, policing the universe divided on billions of sectors, all in the name of the Guardians. And although the number of Lanterns to have served is hard to quantify, few of them reached the level of notoriety as Abin Sur, of Space Sector 2814. Fighting countless battles, many alongside his close friend Thaal Sinestro, his service came to an abrupt end while he was investigating a supposed prophecy regarding a lost space sector. Badly wounded, he crash landed on the planet Earth, dying. He told his ring to search for his successor.

The ring brought him Hal Jordan.

Jordan hardly resembled the ideal officer: He was anti authoritative, reckless and somewhat volatile, characteristics which got him booted out of the Air Force and which barely allowed him to keep a job as a test pilot at Ferris Aircraft. Hal didn't mind the circumstances all that much though. He was only glad he was allowed to fly, just as his father Martin did. He had instilled Hal his philosophy of living without fear, which turned into his current temerarious attitude shortly after witnessing his father dying during a test flight. Ignoring his mother's wishes, Hal continued to look for ways of getting into the air, which costed him his reputation among his family.

That same reputation for disobeying orders with varying returns made him both a valuable asset and an insurance nightmare at Ferris Aircraft. He became the test pilot they would call to test endurance and to perform dangerous stunts, but the amount of expensive aircraft turned to cinder by him was legendary. This alongside his (allegedly somewhat successful) attempts at romancing his boss, Carol Ferris, earned him either some scorn or grudging respect and admiration. It was his surprisingly strong sense of righteousness, his excellent intuition and bravery, however, what truly earned him Carol's heart and mechanic Thomas Kalmaku's friendship.

It was during a somewhat mundane test flight, when communications lost contact with Jordan seemingly out of nowhere. For several hours they searched for him, to no avail. It was believed he had faced the same fate his father did, until he was found in the middle of the desert the next morning. Hal claimed to not remember what had happened, but those who knew him best knew he was hiding something.

And hide something he did. During His flight, Hal almost collisioned with an Unidentified Flying Object, which made him lose control of the plane and crashed. He was about to report via radio, when an orb of Green Light engulfed him and took him to the source of his predicament. That, of course, being legendary Green Lantern Abin Sur. Moments before dying, the red humanoid briefed him into his new role as a Green Lantern, told him to recite the oath, and head to Oa where he would be further informed of his new role as Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Reluctantly, Hal did as told, and once he was finished with the oath, he was forcefully taken once again by the ring, this time out of this world and into Oa.

The ring's decision was received with skepticism. Not only had earth never, in recorded history, had a Green Lantern, but said Green Lantern was succeeding the great Abin Sur. Regardless of personal opinion, Hal shortly began training under drill sergeant Killowog and was mentored by Abin Sur's college, Sinestro. Once again, Hal's attitude had made him infamous, as his actions repeatedly earned him heated scolding from the Guardians themselves (According to Oa's historian Salakk, he had received the biggest amount of reprimands by a single person in the Corps history). And just as in Earth, the same characteristics which made him unpopular also earned him hero status among some of his fellow Lanterns. It came to a head when, having discovered his own mentor, Sinestro's, tyranical ruling of his home planet of Korugar, he exposed him, battled him and successfully imprisoned one of the Corps greatest members.

From there, Hal had finally earned the respect of the Corps. From there on out, he would face off against some nasty threats to justice and order. This included: The Flawed predecessors of the Corps, the Manhunters, maddened psychic Hector Hammond, his own love-crazed sorta girlfriend, Carol, as Star Sapphire, the insanely greedy Larfleeze, the space pirate Kanjar Ro, the Rageful and vengeful Attrocitus and, chief amongst them, his former mentor turned despot, Sinestro.

In time, Hal Jordan proved that the ring had made the right choice. Just as his predecessor, he became one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time. Although seemingly impulsive, reckless and bullheaded, there is no doubt, both within the Green Lantern Corps as well as his fellow Earth companions, that Hal Jordan is worthy of the title of Hero.
