Description 'Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies.
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone...'

- 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' by the Beatles.

This one owes some inspiration, I think to Prague. Nowhere else do you get Mucha, Dali and the Lennon Wall all within walking distance of one another. Surreal art noveau Beatles.

11" x 14", coloured pencil.

This drawing won third place in Manip-Your-Music's fantastic Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album contest: [link] !

You really are an amazing artist. I don't think I could get anything I draw to look like that if I worked for a hundred years. ^^'

Hahaha - You wouldn't say that if you could see any of my sketchbooks from ten years ago! Sometimes I'm tempted to post them for a laugh, but even the thought of it is embarrassing. Personally, I think anyone can get to where they want to be as an artist, given enough time and art supplies. So I look forward to seeing those hundred-years-from-now masterpieces of yours.

Many thanks for the comment!

Reminds me of Loie Fuller. Lovely color scheme, it works very well with the song.

They aren't colours I would normally think to use, but they were all right there in the song lyrics, and I love the way they came together. (And I was able to use some of my more neglected colours, which was satisfying.)

Oooh, I love this soooo much! I love that song, first of all. And this really does a perfect blend of Beatles and Mucha and surrealism. The colours are just perfect for the trippy, strangely calm feeling of the song, and the whole design of the piece is very attractive.
Also, I love Prague. I visited as a child, and it is one of my best memories.
Thanks for using my stock!

Pretty!!! I love the way you did the texture of the water drops.

Thank you! Yes, droplets/bubbles are a fun effect, and surprisingly easy to pull off, once you get used to them. They're all about using the full range of light-to-shadow for a particular colour all in a small space (remembering to have a bit of light bouncing off the closest point to the light source). It's a great device for adding a bit of dimension to anything.

theperian In reply to OPgoddess6 [2010-12-02 06:10:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I wasn't sure how well it would be received - it's tricky to play with such universal images as Beatles' lyrics.

Mind you, now that I've done one, I'm tempted to try another. Eleanor Rigby, perhaps, or Strawberry Fields...

OPgoddess6 In reply to theperian [2010-12-14 03:54:51 +0000 UTC]

It shouldn't be tricky, you have artistic license!
I personally would go with Strawberry Fields. I'm just imagining it now...

theperian In reply to OPgoddess6 [2010-12-14 06:37:48 +0000 UTC]

I did one with Strawberry Fields, actually (yes, great lyrics - should be drawn). I haven't posted it, as I used watercolours (not as used to them) and it doesn't look as nice as what I had imagined. I'll consider it a colour study and do another someday. Any ideas for it?

OPgoddess6 In reply to theperian [2010-12-27 03:54:07 +0000 UTC]

I really couldn't give any. I like what you did here, a little imagination goes a long way! You could literally draw fields of strawberries or the building the song was actually based on. It really depends on your style.
Can't wait for you to post it!
