Why not? Here's Haunter.The gimmick is, each version of Haunter has tattoos made of the spirits of each previous version of Haunter, so he's a legacy character that keeps inheriting the previous legacies, literally.
He can summon them for extra strength in battle, and in theory, each iteration is stronger and more powerful and learns lessons from the previous iteration's mistakes and knowledge. That isn't always the case, of course, but it's the hope for the line.
