Description I don't know if it's 'cuz Winter Is Coming or what, but it seems like recently I've been thinking more about temperate and boreal variations on "megafloral" ecologies and the (mega)fauna that might inhabit them. Like imagine you stopped to take a leak at the base of a brobdingnagian conifer tree on a frosty autumn morning and a gargantuan decapodal pseudosquirrel with a loosely caterpillar-derived body plan came scrambling down the trunk to see what's up. Wouldn't that be kind of disconcerting? I mean, I'm not saying nothing like that has ever happened to me, just maybe not on quite that scale I guess.

For some reason this reminds me a bit of a serpopard.

That's what happens when you ignore the regulations for biocontamination! Those rules are there for a reason!

On a planet cut off from the galaxy, one man will discover perhaps the most unfortunate coincidence in xenobiology. Trapped on a hostile death world, he has to survive pursuit from the horniest megafauna imaginable. Shot on location, Milky Way Movies presents;

Musk

No animals were harmed in the making of this movie

I was going to say Ratatosk but then I saw you linked to the wikipedia article! Very cool. I always thought Ratatosk should be something alien.

That was kind of funny (well, to me, at least)--I didn't make the connection at all at first, but then when I was writing the description I was like, "Wait a second, isn't there some sort of monster squirrel in Norse mythology...? That runs up and down a giant tree, even...?!"

Some of the old illustrations of Ratatosk are just as weird as yours.

Hm, can you link to me to anything? All I'm finding is this little cartoon character from a game or something.

Jesus, that is actually pretty frightening... but in the best way possible!
It’s kinda funny, the first thing I thought of when seeing this was Ratatoskr and then I saw you lined to its wikipedia article as well.
...and if this is Ratataskor, just imagine what the eagle and the hawk sitting between its eyes would look like. Maybe they wouldn’t even be two separate entities but a single biological amalgam based on various avian DNA. Maybe similar to an avian version of this carp: ( imgur.com/gallery/3zL4zFn)

HOLY CARP, THAT FISH IS AMAZING!

Such beautifully bilateral symmetry...I've rarely seen a more "natural"-looking sport!

Very cool idea, and it reminds me again of the kind of "chimericism" seen in some of the Native PNW transformation masks and the like.

Thanks!  : D

I knew you’d like it

The symmetry and the natural look of it was something that really surprised me too... animals with such craniofacial duplication usually look a lot less natural and more mangled. By the looks of it, this animal seems to be fully-grown which is rather rare in animals with such conditions, especially if they’re not raised by humans. But then again, this specimen’s two mouths lead to a single esophagus by the looks of things.

Reminds me of one idea I had about the caterpillarsaur (that I still need to work on). It struck me that while in splitting phase, they could take on an ambush hunting style similar to Hawaiian Eupithecia caterpillars.
