I must admit I don't know more than you... must be some mythical creature...

Fafnir was a Dragon/snake that guarded a cursed gold treasure.
He was killed by Sigurd who wanted the treasure for him self.
He cut out Fafnirs heart, roasted it on the fire and ate it.
Then he was able to understand two ravens (might hav been Hugin and Munin). They told him that his best friend, Regin wanted to kill him for the treasure. So, Sigurd also kills his best friend.
Fafnir was the one to warn Sigurd and Regin about the cursed gold.

Hope this helps

Thanks, yes, I know the story. I just didn't know if the original design was a depiction of Fafnir or not. But I decided to call mine Fafnir anyway.

I don't think it's fafnir.
The only depiction of Fafnir I know, is this one [link]

Wow! I'm amazed you were able to draw and carve that! Whenever I try to draw twisty knots or snakes they end up looking pathetic and wrongly proportioned

Thorleifr In reply to Alnia [2008-08-21 08:58:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, but I did copy it from an existing piece. Only [link] is of my own design..

If I were to guess the wood, it looks like Maple.
But I assume this CUmbrian Lime has the same, nice, easy-to-carve-ability as maple? It looks like it handles a narrow relief well.

Well, I never tried maple, though I have a small log in the garage remaining from our (dead) little maple tree of our garden to be carved..
