Description The last weeks i’m playing around with Vue 8. And finally i found the time to finish up a pic. The new clouds in Vue 8 really are a bit better than in Vue 7. It still takes ages to render them… but they look good. This picture probably is 75% Vue and 25% Photoshop. I used Photoshop to tweak colours and atmosphere. As well as lighting and fixing some weird render results. Especially edges and such things. Smoothing them out. I also painted a few highlights in and added some subtle textures.

Render Info:

My machine is a i7 920 and 12gb ram. For a 3000px wide render it took 4hrs and 30mins to finish. So yeah. Detailed clouds still are time consuming. And i doubt that will change. The terrain was a procedural. Which needed some time too.

Hope you like it as much as i do!

One of the most realistic cg skies I've ever seen, no doubt it won't be long at all before we cant tell the difference. Good stuff

depending on your cpu power it's already possible. but without a renderfarm it can easily take eons for it to render. i'm still working on these clouds and how to use them properly. thx for your feedback buddy.

tigaer In reply to n3oka [2009-12-12 19:46:17 +0000 UTC]

tg2 is ein backstein im vergleich zu vue. brauch seine zeit, wie jedes andere tool auch. wenn man allerdings schon ein paar basics im 3d bereich drauf hat... sollte man ganz gut reinfinden.

12GB of RAM. WOW. (dd2 or dd3?)

I have 8GB but always want to upgrade - rendering always seems to take ages.

Awesome piece, I downloaded the vue 7 PLE edition and am really enjoying it. Might try and do something this awesome shortly.

My computer would probably take a couple of days to render what took your computer 4 hours. I'd say you'll be ok

As for the piece itself, I'd have to say that this is my favorite of your recent submissions. The highlights on the clouds are the perfect touch. I'm also digging the sharpness without oversharpening, very nicely done.

Yeah, the reason why I almost never use spectral clouds is because they take forever to get just right and sometimes the results aren't worth waiting the render times. I recently rendered a clouds-only test scene with 3 spectral cloud layers and only at 1400x875 it took over SEVEN HOURS to render at 'final" quality with very little quality boost in the atmosphere. Needless to say, after I finish rendering another more complex atmopshere (which I'm assuming will take around 9 hours, so I'd better do it when I go to bed) I won't be touching spectral clouds much more often. For ground-based scenes often a volumetric atmosphere with some painting over it is good enough anyway But this I'll admit is a fantastic result!

Hye man nice work with photoshop! Your Vue clouds are a little weird though, they seem just a bit too splotchy, turning up the detail amount should do the trick! But nonetheless, you're getting the favourites so nice work

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tigaer In reply to ExtremeProjects [2009-12-11 02:14:55 +0000 UTC]

i had a mix of clouds here. raising detail value created holes in my cloud carpet and i didn't find a way to fix that. the basic layer had 100% and the smaller ones 600% detail. it's all the balancing. you could tweak a render forever and it's still not 100% right looking and favs mean nothing around here and certainly don't tell anything about quality.

ExtremeProjects In reply to tigaer [2009-12-11 02:56:51 +0000 UTC]

very true. A good artist is never happy with their work well at least, not a month or two later when they look back on it I find I'm always looking at renders and trying to improve things, Although, I'd love to do post work in photoshop, my aim is for CG animations so post work needs to be done on a special fx and filters level and not a single frame.

You're right about favourites, especially once you get so much exposure you're likely to get an influx of favourites "just because"...

The next one in this series should be a study of that effect.
