yeah, backgrounds can be a pain...mine still need a lot of work...
As far of manga books, which ones have you read? Mark Criley's book is really good, and so is Scott McCloud's "Making Comics".

Oh, okay. Yeah looking at actual manga is good too. I try to look at lots of many a and comics with different art styles to see lots of ways of drawing. Sometimes its best to start trying a semi-realistic way, then when you adjust it to your own style it will be easier. Well, for characters, anyway. Backgrounds are still super difficult for me...
