Description A retrospective look at my art from 2012! First, I want to revisit my goals from 2011 and see how well I did:

More of a variation of facial expressions and angles.
Success for the most part! I actually am proud of myself for trying more head angles than I did last year, including front-on portraits and tilted up heads, which are hardest for me. As far as expressions go, I could have definitely pushed myself further and explored more, but I definitely didn't do all sexy scowls.

More pictures with two or more characters interacting
Also a success! I did a lot of fun smut (and non-smut) pictures of pairs of characters, and a few with more than two.

More female characters!
Uuuuh. Well, being that there are ALL men in the meme, it almost looks like no, but I did draw at least 5 or so ladies this year. Still, not enough.

Further explorations with color palettes, especially in regard to conveying mood.
Success! I did a lot of exploring with color and definitely paid more attention to how my color palettes create the mood of my pictures.

I need to push myself to do more narrative pictures
Success! I definitely did do more backgrounds this year and pushed myself to tell stories with them. So, yay.

Continue exploring completely original ideas and characters
Despite a relapse into a lot of Warcraft centric art, I definitely created a lot of original characters, though not all of them have made it to being drawn yet.

Stop negatively comparing myself to other artists
Great success! I now follow over 200 tumblr blogs, most of them art blogs, and while I do have envy of others' art skills, I no longer critically/negatively compare myself to other artists and let their skills make me feel bad about my own. I am inspired by them, and I know with practice I will be just as good as they are!

And now for a review of this year!

January - March: Having some time to myself, I started doing a lot of gift art as well as exploring some original characters. This was also the time that I felt like I really started to feel comfortable and confident in my painting style, though it still didn't have a definite method.

April- June: Continuing with gift art, I also took some commissions, a lot of which were Warcraft related. It's funny how, despite not playing the game anymore, I really got into having a lot of Warcraft-centric art to do. Mostly because it wasn't just trolls, and I was able to do some subjects I hadn't done a lot before like elves and other races. Also, I did more experimenting with using a value/grayscale layer, but found that I prefer not to rely on one.

July- September: My art looks like it started to take a shift even further into pseudo-realism. My focus on varying facial features increased, and I paid close attention to the structure and proportions of the face. I looked at a lot of tutorials and references.

October - December: Being deep in commissions, my subject matter was almost predominantly Warcraft. Not that I minded, really, as my interest in the game and the fandom has piqued again. I did a lot of fun color experimentation.

Overall, another great year for progression! I did a lot of human/humanoid faces this year, so I feel that my grasp of rendering the face has gotten much better. I also feel like I have a paint/color style of my own and can definitely see it among my pictures, and other people seem to see it as well.

Goals for 2013:
  • Action poses. Having found some amazing stock references here on DA, I'd like to challenge myself to do less pin-up, stagnant poses and more action focused ones.

  • More females. Again, I draw lots of dudes (which I prefer), but I'd like to challenge myself to render more ladies.

  • More narrative pictures, with focus on characters not facing the viewer and being more "natural" in their scene.

  • Continue to improve on facial and body anatomy

  • Less Warcraft, more original characters!

Again, thank you so much to all of my fans and followers who have checked out my work. Your support is so appreciated, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy what I create! Here's to the new year and new art!
