It is true! It lives down in the Mariana Trench, I've heard and it inspired Hans Christian Andersen to his fairy tale "The Little Mermaid"... just before he got eaten.

erm, actually the mermaid at the end of the tongue is a piranha mermaid that masticates the diver for the big fish. shit happens, i would say.
