Description OOOh I've missed these guys!

Time has passed. They're getting ready to go into town to meet the fisherman's friends and the selkie puts her hair up special for the occasion.

Gouache and photoshop. New watchers (or possibly everyone just because it's been so long) can catch up here: [link]

I hope to see another painting based on their life. Β Does he regret ever taking her selkie skin?

Are they officially a couple? Why is he carefully inspecting the lintel?

I love how you use your warm and cool colours to contrast each other, rather than using black. It gives off a really soft and natural look.

Will she ever get her seal skin back? Anyway perhaps a scene where she learn to sew and she sews a seal tail made from patches of cloth.

That's such a lovely idea! Unfortunately I don't think it fits into the story in my head- she begins to forget, a bit, and she's never much of a housewife!

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

You've got some great economy of marks in this one and I'm really enjoying how that rich blue in the shadows feels like it's trying to pop right off the painting it's so vibrant. Fun stuff. My only criticism, and it's not really a criticism is that I keep getting stuck in the upper left hand corner because the marks you used to make the thatched roof are more seductive than the faces of the characters! Some seriously beautiful mark making. THanks for sharing!

love your and kai's stuff really love them allot, they have feeling and soul, something you don't see even in the most aclaimed artists..
may I ask the brand of the gouache you use?

I read aloud this comment to Kai over the wall and he was very pleased. Thanks for your kind words!

We both use Windsor Newton Designers gouache and same brand of watercolor. I've never used any other brand of gouache but I've never heard any another one recommended, either.

Another fantastic piece to add to this series. I love the soft colours and the detail put into his expression. The shadows are so soft and lovely, and she has just the perfect tinge or worry and hopefullness.

Finally! I was getting worried that you had some writersblock! I think I have said it before but I simply love your style and how you potray the fishermans apperiance and personality. Just curious, what`s he looking at over his head? tracing his finger over the doorframe?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to eitherangel [2011-06-01 16:35:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!!! Yeah I wish there were more leading men who looked like him. The big bearish protector type is really attractive to a lot of people, so it seems like a totally un-plumbed market. Wonder why.

As to his ...er....pose? Hahaha kai and I were just talking about how this is one of those illustrations that, like a frame of a movie, when taken out of context, means NOTHING. He's actually supposed to be just sort of leaning/hanging on the doorway looking at her. But I didn't push it too hard so i'm not bothered if it's not too clear, I kind of like how people have been making up their own stories for these illustrations.

Damn that was a long comment haha anyway thank you!

I love his white shirts , I kinda want to see her hanging his laundry, you are so amazing with lighting, and seeing beautiful white laundry in the sun would be so beautiful! Hahaha, that's right... you. woman. you clean things. Maybe he can be hanging the laundry and she can be watching
