The SkyRender Altai'ir

The Sky Dragons once ruled over their world.
Fast, fierce, intelligent, noble. They may have been the greatest of all the races of dragons.
Carrying great destructive potential, but also the wisdom to abstain from using it.

The Sky Dragons could grow to be over thirty feet long, and kept on growing as long as they lived, like most dragons, and they did not die of old age, living lives on the edge of a razor that extended in brutal crashes and battles against much greater foes, or when their wings were damaged beyond repair and they could no longer fly. A typical dragon's lifespan would be some 60 years.

Sky Dragons rarely reproduced, rearing a hatchling once a decade, and spending at least 5 years training it to fly. A Dragonchild would learn to hold it's own in the air in it's first week, long before it can run or feed itself. An adult dragon dropped a baby several hundred feet in the middle of the sky while it's mate caught it to keep it from hurt.
Following this came a period of intense training.

A Sky Dragon was deemed an adult the day it broke the sound barrier in flight, and thus began it's search for its ideal mate. The greatest Sky Dragons could reach speeds greater than twice the speed of sound.

These Dragons can achieve these incredible speeds by using an internal mechanism that functions like a jet engine, drawing in massive quantities of air through ventilators near the head, compressing it and blasting it out for a burst of speed.

The sky dragon cannot breathe fire, as it's heat generating mechanism has become integrated into it's jet engine after millions of years of evolution.

Instead, the dragon relies on generating sonic shockwaves to disorient enemies, and fierce lashes of concentrated air at over mach 1 (which strike a foe like a ton of concrete), and the Heat-Render, a risky technique in which the Dragon's heat engine and jet systems are put into overdrive to create a temperature gradient of thousands of degrees upto a range of about a foot and a half, a move that, if executed correctly, can allow the dragon to tear through mountainsides like they were made of paper, but the smallest miscalculation in speed, temperature and penetrating would make it fatal for the dragon.

The Dragon's skin also carries the ability to create colour gradients, being able to display 7 different shades at once out of a total of 122 colours, allowing the creatures to hide in plain sight- silhouetted against the sky. Their wings glow a brilliant blue against the morning sky, and pitch black at night.

The SkyDragons had incredibly well developed senses of sight and touch (smell being useless at supersonic speeds, and sound being untrustworthy the fast you go)- allowing them to spot a an object miles away, and to detect the slightest changes in air pressure.

When the invaders arrived, the sky dragons were an immediate threat- the only creatures capable of launching an attack on the Invader transport ships. During the first years of the colonization of the New World, the invaders carried out the systematic destruction of the race of sky dragons, driving the once noble race to extinction- they poisoned the sky and set areas 10km in radius ablaze with their explosions of toxic fire, butchered dragonchildren in nests and engaged the strong warriors in aerial combat with their floating bugs.

---------------

Five years after the Skydragons were declared extinct, the frontier teams still live in fear of the one knows as the the Last Sky Dragon,

He is said to be vast, over forty feet long, and terribly vicious. He is said to fly faster than anything else on the entire planet-

It is said that he can cross the speed of sound four times over.

They say that he circles the entire planet twice a day, seeking for a foe on which to extract vengeance for the destruction of his race.

They say that he rips flying transport shuttles in half, the Sky Render, and the invaders' missiles and flames cannot catch up to his speed.

The army command tells the invader grunts and footmen that he is just a myth, that the Sky Dragons, while fierce, were nothing to fear for the invaders, reminding them that they are extinct- vanquished easily by the invaders' surprise assault.

And yet the invader command has a name for the creature, though only a few know that there may be something to fear after all... they call it Altai'ir.
