Description Over 55 million years ago, on the fantasy world of Oshar, the lands, seas and skies were ruled by a large and diverse clade known as the draconic reptiles.
Many of the draconic reptiles reached great sizes and had supernatural abilities. And the very biggest and most powerful of them were the dragons and the akuparas.

Measuring 50-100 metres (164 - 328 feet) long, with hollow yet extremely strong bones, a coat of hard osteoderms, a third pair of limbs in the form of tremendous wings, and countless incredible abilities of truly terrifying power, dragons were the undisputed apex predators of prehistoric Oshar.
Like their distant modern avian relatives, these superpredators had a highly advanced syrinx, with a complex system of valves over which they had perfect control. A crystalline structure inside the dragon's skull (known as a "dragon pearl") constantly absorbed and stored magical energy from the surrounding environment, and when the dragon "sang" at a particular frequency, the pearl would resonate and a particular type of breath weapon would erupt from the beast's cavernous maw.
Although dragonfire was the easiest to produce, these breath weapons also ranged from sonic shockwaves, to magnetic disruption, to a corrosive steam, to bolts of lightning, to a concentrated "plasma death ray".

Now why would an animal ever need such terrifying power, you may ask? Well, because the dragon hunted prey that could withstand nearly anything it could throw at it.

Measuring 125 metres (410 feet) or more in length and weighing over a thousand tons, if ever an animal could be called an "ultimate herbivore", the akupara was that animal.
A draconic reptile fairly closely related to the dragons that preyed upon it, the akupara also sported an abnormal number of limbs (except it took this to even more of an extreme, with 5 pairs of pillar-like legs to support its immense weight). Its mouth was a wide and highly efficient plant-eating machine, with row upon row of hundreds of self-replacing shearing teeth and a tongue that forked twice into four muscular and highly flexible tentacles (for grabbing multiple branches or trees at once and pulling them into its mouth).
It was heavily armoured, with a thick covering of a stone-like form of a keratin-like substance known as "platestone". Platestone was highly magical in nature, and constantly generated a heavily fire-dulling forcefield around itself at all times. The jagged and uneven armour culminated in an enormous spiked tail club the size of a small hill, easily strong enough to tear dragon wings and even break their bones.
The akupara's deadliest weapon however, was its voice. Like a dragon it too had a crystalline pearl inside its skull and an advanced syrinx, and when it roared in self-defence, a magically concentrated torrent or "beam" of sound was fired from its lungs.
This sound played on every single sound frequency simultaneously, hitting the resonating frequency of many different substances at once and, due to the catastrophic volume, nearly any form of matter hit by this "roar of the earth" would immediately be either liquified or reduced to dust.

However, even these mighty beasts couldn't rule the world forever. 55 million years ago, a great asteroid struck Oshar in the region that is now Jassa Bay, sending the planet into an ice age that was short but utterly devastating to the heat-loving draconic reptiles.
Today, for the most part draconic reptiles are only found in the deepest and hottest regions of the tropics.

Amazingly, a small handful of dragons and akuparas have actually managed to survive into the modern age, miraculously saved from the prehistoric mass extinction by their dragon pearls sending them into a state of suspended animation for millions of years.
As long as no earthquake or volcanic eruption wakes them up, they continue to slumber.

For now...
