I'll admit lack of experience in cosmetic body art, but try to focus on depth. The larger wounds lack a certain severity... in other words, it does not look like it was a fatal wound or decay. Making them dark and deeper looking will make it more realistic.... well, for a zombie.

thanks for the cents, i've very little formal training and am really learning as i go so i take help when it's offered!
i didn't really post the whole story here either, i didn't want to bore people, but Zac is very freshly dead... or maybe even not quite dead yet 
i mostly blame the atrocious lighting in the hallway, the hand wound is actually quite deep
