There's a new version of IA from Mdql which does not have this "issue". Link is on Xoriu's blog. Still like this version though. BTW it's fixable (the white face), just need to specify a different tone shader (or take it off completely). There are also some toon shaders that works also, self-shadow really helps if you can get it to work w/o crashing MMD.
Still, there's a charm about it "as is".

i've noticed in recent times that this model have a weird, fake-looking white face... Looks like a mask

It's not just IA. Most of the MMD models I've been seeing lately have had an abundance of white facial tones. My personal thinking on that is a throwback to the old Japanese styles of females having absolutely white faces, with a minimum of makeup, similar to Geisha women. I'm sure there's another explanation for it.

It's because of the toon texture that Mqdl uses for the faces for his models. It probably works fine when you have self-shadow on. Unfortunately, my system crashes when I try to run that feature.
